SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 3661 for end-suction centrifugal pumps. It specifies baseplate and installation dimensions, including alternative fixing-hole arrangements, for pump-and-motor assemblies installed on a foundation. The standard is intended mainly for pumps in accordance with ISO 2858 coupled to foot-mounted electric motors.

What does SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 specify?

SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 specifies the basic baseplate and installation dimensions for end-suction centrifugal pumps, and it gives alternative numbers and locations of baseplate fixing holes to suit different installations. It covers baseplate numbers 2 to 9.

The standard is organized into:

  • Clause 1 Scope
  • Clause 2 Field of application
  • Clause 3 References
  • Clause 4 Baseplate dimensions
  • Clause 5 Basic installation dimensions

It also contains Figure 1 and Tables 1 and 2, which carry the dimensional data and the selection rules used in practice.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 3661:2012?

SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 is a dimensional standard rather than a performance standard. Its main task is to help designers, manufacturers and installers match the pump, motor and baseplate before the assembly is mounted on a foundation.

1) Use the standard for the intended pump-and-motor arrangement

Clause 2 says the data are intended primarily for centrifugal pumps in accordance with ISO 2858, coupled to foot-mounted electric motors. In practice, this means the standard is meant for selecting a baseplate and setting out the installation for a common pump-motor set, not for defining hydraulic performance.

2) Select a baseplate number from the defined range

Clause 1 and Table 1 cover baseplate numbers 2 to 9. That matters because the baseplate number is the starting point for choosing the overall dimensions and the hole pattern that fit the installation.

3) Use Table 1 and Figure 1 for the baseplate dimensions

Clause 4 says the baseplate dimensions and reference numbers are given in Figure 1 and Table 1. Figure 1 shows the basic layout, while Table 1 gives the dimensional values for each baseplate number. For the user, this is the information needed to check whether a baseplate will fit the available space and match the pump set.

4) Use Table 2 to match pump size and motor frame size to the baseplate

Clause 5 says the appropriate baseplate number is taken from Table 2 using the pump designation and the electric motor frame number. The same table then gives the basic installation dimensions. In practice, this is the key selection step for design and procurement.

5) Follow the rule on pump and motor centre-line height

Table 2 uses a bold dividing line to show whether the pump centre-line height or the electric motor centre-line height governs. This matters because the installation height is set by whichever component is higher, so the designer can avoid an assembly that cannot be aligned on the foundation.

6) Use the fixing-hole options as permitted by the pump manufacturer

Figure 1 shows five hole positions, A, B, C, D and E, but the notes state that baseplates may have either four holes A, B, C and D or three holes A, C and E, as determined by the pump manufacturer. This gives installation flexibility while keeping the hole pattern controlled.

7) Read the height notes correctly

The notes explain that hmax includes packing between the baseplate and the pump or motor, and that the actual height may be less. They also state that additional sub-structures, such as feet for free-standing installations and vibration dampers, are not included in Hmax and hmax. For the installer, this means the published heights are not a complete substitute for the full installation design.

8) Understand what the table dimensions represent

The notes to Table 1 state that L1 and S1 are the length and width of the working surface and do not include casting slope. In practice, this prevents confusion between the usable mounting surface and the full cast shape.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 3661:2012?

SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 refers to several related standards:

  • ISO 2858 - defines end-suction centrifugal pumps, including designation, nominal duty point and dimensions.
  • ISO/R 273, replaced by ISO 273(all parts) - gives clearance holes for metric bolts.
  • IEC Publication 72, replaced by IEC 60072-1 - gives dimensions and output ratings for rotating electrical machines, including frame numbers and flange numbers.

These references are important because the baseplate dimensions depend on the pump standard, the motor frame size and the bolt-hole geometry.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 replaces SIST EN 23661:2000. The European foreword says the content is identical to EN 23661 and that the numbering was changed to align with the ISO collection numbering. The foreword also notes that the standard supersedes EN 23661:1993.

What does the SIST EN ISO 3661:2012 document contain?

The document contains the dimensional layout for the baseplate, a table of baseplate reference numbers and dimensions, and a table that links pump and motor sizes to the correct baseplate number and installation dimensions. It also includes a figure showing the basic baseplate and installation dimensions and the possible fixing-hole positions.

For design work, the tables support selection and layout. For manufacturing and installation, they provide the dimensions needed to make, check and mount the baseplate and the pump-motor set on a foundation.
