SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 is the SIST publication of EN 60512-2-5, identical to IEC 60512-2-5:2003. It specifies a test method for detecting contact disturbance in connectors for electronic equipment and, when a detail specification calls for it, in similar devices. Engineers, test labs, quality managers, and buyers use it to agree on how to check brief contact interruptions during dynamic stress.

What does SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 specify?

SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 is a test method document for electrical continuity and contact resistance testing. Its scope says the method applies to connectors for electronic equipment and can also be used for similar devices when the detail specification requires it.

The document is organized into five clauses:

  • Clause 1 - Scope and object
  • Clause 2 - Mounting of the test specimen
  • Clause 3 - Method of measurement
  • Clause 4 - Requirements
  • Clause 5 - Details to be specified

The note in Clause 1 points readers to Part 1 of this standard for the standard conditions of testing. In practice, that means the exact test setup is not fixed only by this part - the detail specification and Part 1 define the test context.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004?

SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 defines how to detect a contact disturbance while the specimen is under dynamic stress. The main idea is to watch for brief interruptions in an otherwise closed circuit, or brief closures in an otherwise open circuit, during bump, shock, vibration, or acceleration testing.

Mounting and test setup

Clause 2 says the test specimen shall be mounted as required by the detail specification. That matters because fixture design can affect whether a connector shows a disturbance, so the mounting method has to be fixed before testing starts.

How the disturbance is monitored

Clause 3 requires measurement during dynamic conditions and for the period stated in the relevant test or detail specification. Contacts may be monitored individually or in groups; when groups are used, closed contacts may be connected in series and open contacts in parallel. If a group test shows failure, individual contacts may then be tested separately.

Electrical test conditions

Clause 4 says the measurement uses direct current (d.c.) not exceeding 150 mA and a voltage source not exceeding 10 V. This keeps the monitoring circuit light enough for continuity checking without overstressing the contacts under test.

Clause 4 also sets the disturbance criterion by voltage change across the contact. A closed contact is treated as disturbed when the voltage across it rises above half the source voltage; an open contact is treated as disturbed when the voltage falls below half the source voltage. In practice, this gives a clear pass/fail threshold for short interruptions.

Disturbance duration and resistance change

Clause 4 says the duration of the disturbance shall not exceed the limit given in the relevant test or detail specification. It also gives preferred duration values spanning microseconds to milliseconds. If the disturbance is judged as a change in contact resistance, that change has to be stated in the detail specification.

What the detail specification must state

Clause 5 lists the items that the detail specification shall define: mounting and wiring, monitoring period if different, contacts to be monitored and their operating condition, the allowable disturbance duration, any required change of contact resistance, and any deviation from the standard method. This is the part that turns the general test method into a usable project-specific test plan.

What changed in SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 cancels and replaces Test 2e of IEC 60512-2, published in 1985. The foreword describes it as a technical revision.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004?

Part 1 of this standard provides the standard conditions of testing referred to in Clause 1. It supplies the general test conditions that sit alongside the specific contact disturbance method in this part.

What does the SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 document contain?

SIST EN 60512-2-5:2004 contains a compact test method rather than a long set of product requirements. It covers specimen mounting, dynamic monitoring during bump, shock, vibration, or acceleration, and the voltage-based criteria used to decide whether a contact has been disturbed.

It also includes the list of items that the detail specification must fix before testing. That makes the document useful for design verification, qualification, and laboratory testing where repeatable contact-disturbance checks are needed.
