INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
HOLLOW METALLIC WAVEGUIDES
Part 4: Relevant specifications for circular waveguides
FOREWORD
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the
1)
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
2)
sense.
In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt
3)
the text of the I EC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence
between the IEC recommendations and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly
indicated in the latter.
PREFACE
This publication was prepared by Sub-Committee 46B, Waveguides and their Accessories, of
Technical Committee No. 46, Cables, Wires and Waveguides for Telecommunication Equipment.
It contains Part 4: Relevant Specifications for Circular Waveguides, of the complete IEC recom-
mendation for hollow metallic waveguides, and it is intended to be used in conjunction with Part 1,
General Requirements and Measuring Methods, which is issued as IEC Publication 153-1.
Detail specifications for other types of waveguide are issued in companion publications.
The amendments and supplements contained in this second edition of Publication 153-4 have been
approved in several Six Months' Rule documents.
were discussed at meetings in Baden-Baden in June 1965, in London in
The amendments to Table Ia
September 1968 and in The Hague in November 1970. The resulting drafts were submitted to the National
Committees for approval under the Six Months' Rule as follows:
Document 46B(Central Office)25, circulated in November 1965
Document 46B(Central Office)46, circulated in September 1969
Document 46B(Central Office)49, circulated in April 1971.

DIMENSIONAL DEVIATIONS
The values for the permissible deviations in this recommendation follow the principles given in ISO
Recommendation R286, ISO System of Limits and Fits, where:
Deviation is defined as:
Algebraical difference between a size (actual, maximum, etc.) and the corresponding basic size.
Upper deviation is defined as:
Algebraical difference between the maximum limit of size and the col responding basic size.
And lower deviation is defined as:
Algebraical difference between the minimum limit of size and the corresponding basic size.

---------------------- Page: 5 ----------------------

— 9 —
It should be noted that the upper and lower deviations may have like signs, unlike signs or either
deviation may be zero. This permits the basic sizes of mating shafts and holes to be identical.
The older concept of plus tolerances and minus tolerances has an undesirable limitation, in that the
basic sizes of mating shafts and holes cannot be identical for clearance fits.

HOLLOW METALLIC WAVEGUIDES
Part 4: Relevant specifications for circular waveguides
CIRCULAR WAVEGUIDES — TYPE C
Clause No. Item
1. General
Standardized types
1.1
The series of circular waveguides covered by this publication are shown in
Ib. The preferred types are shown in Table Ia. As it might be
Tables la and
desirable to use circular waveguides of intermediate sizes, Table Ib has been
added in which the latter types are included.
Type designation
1.2
For these waveguides, the type designation comprises:
a) The code: 153 IEC-C
b) A number characterizing a particular size of waveguide. This number
expresses 'approximately in multiples of 100 MHz the geometric mean
11
frequency in the H (TE11) mode.
1.3 Frequency range
In Table Ia, the cut-off frequencies are shown for the following modes:
H
01 (TE01) and Hoe (TEo2)
H11 (TE11), E01 (TM01)> H21 (TE21),
2. Mechanical requirements
It should be noted that no recommendations are made for the materials to be
used for waveguides. The choice of material must be agreed between customer
and manufacturer.
2.1 Dimensions
Inside dimensions
2.1.1
The basic values and the deviations are specified in Table Ia.

CIRCULAR WAVEGUIDES — TYPE C (continued)
Clause No. Item
a) Diameter
The values of diameter deviations specified in Table Ia are in accord with
the following table.
Deviation
A-
Range of sizes
mm in
C 3.3 — C 165 1/1000 of inside basic diameter
C 190 — C 220
0.010 0.0004
C 255 —
C 890 0.008 0.0003
b) Ellipticity
— Dmax —Dmin
The ellipticity "E" is defined as E
Dnom
where Dnom = the basic inside diameter
Dma = the largest measured inside dimension
D
min = the smallest measured inside dimension.
The ellipticity E shall not exceed 0.001 at any cross-section for types C 3.3
to C 165 inclusive.
For sizes C 190 and smaller dimensions: the requirement for ellipticity is
for subsequent study.
2.1.2
Wall thickness
The basic values specified in Table Ia conform to the following rules.
The basic wall thickness is defined as half the difference between the basic
outside and inside dimensions in the original systems of units.
After conversion from inches into mm, the values were rounded to the nearest
0.005 mm.
After conversion from mm into inches, the values were rounded to the nearest
0.001 in.
2.1.3 Eccentricity
The eccentricity is defined as half the difference between the measured thickness
of opposite walls. Unless otherwise specified, the eccentricity shall not exceed
10% of the basic wall thickness. For the determination of the eccentricity,
the thicknesses shall be measured where they give the most unfavourable
result.

CIRCULAR WAVEGUIDES — TYPE C (continued)
Clause No. Item
2.1.4
Outside dimensions
The basic values and the deviations are specified in Table Ia.
No outside dimensions have been specified for some of the largest sizes
because a variety of manufacturing techniques are used.
The values of the outside diameter deviations specified in Table Ia are in
accord with the following table.
Deviation
Range of sizes
mm in
C 16 and larger dimensions No deviation specified
C 18 0.13 0.005
0.11 0.004
C 22 — C 25

C 140 — C 165 0.055 0.0020
0.050 0.0020
C 190 and smaller dimensions
Note. — Deviations for the sizes C 18 to C 165 inclusive correspond to ISO
limit js 11.
2.2 Other mechanical requirements
Bow
2.2.1
Bow is defined as the maximum departure of the actual axis of the waveguide
from a straight line of specified length connecting two points on that axis.
The bow is measured on the external surface of the waveguide. For a length
of 10 times the internal width, the external bow shall not exceed 10 times the
specified deviation on the internal width.
For a length of 50 times the internal width, the external bow shall not exceed
40 times the specified deviation on the internal width.
For the determination of the external bow, the waveguide shall be so positioned
that gravity does not tend to affect the amount of bow.
Surface roughness
2.2.2
Under consideration.

CIRCULAR WAVEGUIDES — TYPE C (continued)
Clause No. Item
2.2.3
Internal stresses
The waveguide tube shall be cut by means of a saw. The cutting process must
be carefully controlled so as to avoid distortion arising from the cutting, and
the use of a fine high-speed saw is recommended. After cutting, the cross-
section of the waveguide tube shall still be within the specified deviations.
3. Electrical tests
3.1
Attenuation
The maximum attenuation in the H11 (TE11
) mode for waveguide IEC-C 104
and waveguides with larger dimensions shall not exceed 1.3 times the value
calculated from the formula below at a frequency of 1.2 times the cut-off
frequency in the same mode. The values given in the table are for waveguides
made of copper with standard resistivity po = 1.7241 . 10-8 ohm-metre.
