(Main)Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 18: Binder drainage
- Abstract
This document describes two test methods:
- basket method (see Clause 4);
- beaker method (see Clause 5).
The basket method describes a method for determining binder drainage of bituminous mixtures. This method directly measures binder drainage, but when carried out on bituminous mixtures with fibres or mixtures whose mortar content is higher than in porous asphalt some clogging of the holes in the drainage baskets can occur, limiting the drainage of the binder. The basket method can be used either for determining the binder drainage for different binder content, or with a single binder content, eliminating the successive repetitions. It also enables the effects of varying fine aggregate types or including any anti-draining additive to be quantified.
The beaker method describes a method for determining binder drainage of bituminous mixtures. It is applicable to asphalt materials that are not porous asphalt or for porous asphalt incorporating fibres. It can be used either for determining the binder drainage for different binder content, or with a single binder content, eliminating the successive repetitions. It also enables the effects of varying fine aggregate types or including any anti-draining additive to be quantified.

kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 is a draft European standard for bituminous mixtures, prepared in CEN/TC 227 and published by SIST. It specifies two test methods for binder drainage in asphalt materials: the basket method and the beaker method. Laboratories, road-material producers, and factory production control teams use it to compare mixtures by binder content, fine aggregate type, or anti-draining additive.
What does kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 covers the determination of binder drainage in bituminous mixtures and is organized into a short main text plus two method clauses. Clause 4 gives the basket method and Clause 5 gives the beaker method, each with principle, materials, apparatus, procedure, calculation, test report, and precision.
The basket method is meant for direct measurement of binder drainage, including cases where different binder contents are tested or where a single binder content is checked without repeated preparation. The beaker method serves the same overall purpose, but it is aimed at asphalt materials that are not porous asphalt, or at porous asphalt incorporating fibres.
The document also points to the relevant sampling, mixing, binder, and sieve standards used alongside the test.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026?
Basket method
kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 requires a heated, vibration-free oven, drainage baskets made from 3.15 mm perforated plate, and weighing and temperature equipment with defined accuracy. In practice, this means the test depends on controlled heating and a basket geometry that allows drained binder to collect and be weighed.
The basket method uses enough material to prepare at least 4 kg of asphalt material, with 2.5 kg more for each additional binder content. Aggregates must be dried to constant mass and graded to the specified fractions, so the test starts from a controlled mixture rather than a loose field sample.
Clause 4.4 sets the test temperature from the mixture type: paving grade bitumen uses the EN 12697-35 reference compaction temperature plus 25 °C, while modified bitumen to EN 14023, or other additives, use the supplier’s installation temperature plus 15 °C. If a different temperature is used for a specific mixture, the report must state it.
The method uses duplicate samples at each binder content, and if the difference in drained material for a pair exceeds 0.5 %, the test is repeated. Clause 4.5 also requires the average of at least two results, rounded to 0.1 %, and plots mean drainage against binder content when several binder contents are tested.
Beaker method
kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 requires a similar oven control, but uses 800 ml glass beakers and a 1 mm sieve for cases where the retained material includes mortar or aggregate particles. The beaker method is therefore better suited to checking what remains after a controlled overturning step, not just what drains freely.
Clause 5.4 sets the test temperature in the same general way, but it must not be higher than the reference compaction temperature plus 25 °C for paving grade bitumen. The test also uses three batches of 1 kg aggregate per binder content, and each beaker must be weighed before and after heating.
After 60 minutes in the oven, the beaker is turned over for 10 seconds and weighed again. If the retained material is not just binder, it is washed over the 1 mm sieve and the residue is weighed separately. Clause 5.5 then calculates drained material, and where relevant the sieve residue, from the measured masses.
Reporting and precision
Both methods require reporting the sample identification, method used, target temperature, deviations, unusual features, date, and the drainage result. The beaker method also requires the mixture temperature after 60 minutes in the oven. Official precision has not yet been established for either method, but both clauses include estimated repeatability and reproducibility values.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 define?
- Binder drainage - the separation of binder, fine particles, and any additives from the mixture after mixing or during transport.
- Basket method - the method in Clause 4 that measures drained material collected on a perforated basket after 3 hours.
- Beaker method - the method in Clause 5 that measures drainage from a beaker after 1 hour at temperature.
- BD - the drained material result, expressed as a percentage of the original mixture mass.
- R - the residue on the 1 mm sieve, expressed as a percentage when the beaker method leaves solid residue.
Who uses kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026?
kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 is used by asphalt laboratories, road-material producers, and factory production control staff. It is also relevant to technicians comparing binder contents, fibre additions, fine aggregate types, or anti-draining additives. In practice, it supports mix development, routine production checks, and troubleshooting when binder loss is a concern.
What changed in kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 from the previous edition?
kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 is intended to supersede EN 12697-18:2017. The draft updates the weighing and temperature wording in both methods, revises the contents of both test reports, and removes notes in Clause 4.5 and Clause 5.5.1. It also aligns the report item lists with current CEN/CENELEC editorial rules.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026?
- EN 12697-27 - gives the sampling method when samples are taken from factory production control.
- EN 12697-35 - provides the laboratory mixing reference used to set the test temperature and prepare mixtures.
- EN 14023 - defines polymer modified bitumens used when the test temperature is based on supplier installation temperature.
- ISO 3310-1 - specifies the 1 mm test sieve used in the beaker method.
- ISO 3310-2 - specifies the perforated metal plates used to build the drainage baskets.
What does the kSIST FprEN 12697-18:2026 document contain?
The document contains two full test methods, each with principle, materials, apparatus, procedure, calculation, reporting, and precision. It includes the basket geometry in Figure 1, formulas for drainage calculation, and detailed step-by-step procedures for duplicate testing and binder-content series. It also identifies when a residue on a 1 mm sieve must be measured and when a result should be repeated.

1 Scope
This document describes two test methods:
— basket method (see Clause 4);
— beaker method (see Clause 5).
The basket method describes a method for determining binder drainage of bituminous mixtures. This
method directly measures binder drainage, but when carried out on bituminous mixtures with fibres or
mixtures whose mortar content is higher than in porous asphalt some clogging of the holes in the
drainage baskets can occur, limiting the drainage of the binder. The basket method can be used either
for determining the binder drainage for different binder content, or with a single binder content,
eliminating the successive repetitions. It also enables the effects of varying fine aggregate types or
including any anti-draining additive to be quantified.
The beaker method describes a method for determining binder drainage of bituminous mixtures. It is
