SIST EN 13830:2015+A1:2020 - Overview
SIST EN 13830:2015+A1:2020 is the European product standard for curtain walling used as part of the building envelope. It specifies performance requirements, test/assessment/calculation methods and compliance criteria for curtain walling kits (including fixings) intended to provide weather resistance, safety in use, energy economy and heat retention. The standard applies to curtain walling from vertical up to ±15° from the vertical (including any contained sloping parts) and covers whole kits that do not form part of the load‑bearing structure and can be replaced independently.
Key exclusions: patent glazing (sloping glazed roofs), roof glazing constructions and façades made of precast concrete panels as the main wall (see EN 14992). Durability of structural sealed glazing infills is not covered.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
The standard addresses a broad range of technical properties and conformity processes, including:
- Weather performance: watertightness, air permeability, water vapour permeability
- Structural behaviour: resistance to own dead load, wind load, snow load (where applicable), live horizontal loads at sill level
- Safety and durability: impact resistance (internal/external), seismic resistance (Annex B, normative), thermal shock resistance, durability of watertightness and thermal performance
- Fire performance: reaction to fire of components, fire resistance and fire propagation to upper levels
- Thermal & acoustic performance: thermal transmittance (U-values), radiation properties, direct airborne sound insulation and flanking transmission
- Assessment & conformity: sampling, type testing, testing methods, Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP), and Factory Production Control (FPC) requirements (including initial inspection, continuous surveillance and product-specific controls)
- Supporting guidance: Annex A provides guidance on resistance to actions using Eurocodes
These topics are supported by detailed test procedures, sampling rules and compliance criteria provided in the standard.

The SIST EN 13830:2015+A1:2020 standard serves as a comprehensive product standard for curtain walling systems, delineating specific requirements for curtain walling kits that function as building envelopes. Its primary focus is on ensuring weather resistance, safety during use, and efficient energy economy and heat retention. This standard stands out due to its detailed testing, assessment, and calculation methods, as well as compliance criteria related to the performance of curtain walling products. One significant strength of this standard is its clarification of the structural role of curtain walling kits. It clearly states that these kits must maintain their own integrity and mechanical stability but do not contribute to the load-bearing capacity of the main building structure. This differentiation allows architects and builders to design and install curtain walling systems with a better understanding of their limitations and capabilities, promoting both safety and efficacy. Furthermore, SIST EN 13830:2015+A1:2020's applicability to various elevations of curtain walling, specifically from a vertical position to ± 15°, highlights its versatility in application across different building designs and contexts. The standard encompasses the entirety of the curtain walling kits, including all necessary fixings, thereby ensuring that all components are addressed comprehensively within the framework of performance criteria. Moreover, the standard is particularly relevant due to its exclusion of certain elements such as “patent glazing” and roof glazing constructions, which is important for professionals in the construction sector to understand the boundaries of applicability. It provides clarity that while precautions and definitions are laid out, infill solutions like precast concrete panels can still be incorporated within the curtain wall systems considered under this standard. While the document does not cover aspects like the durability of structural sealed glazing infills, its scope remains focused and relevant to the primary functions of curtain walling as a crucial part of the building envelope. Overall, SIST EN 13830:2015+A1:2020 provides a robust framework for the design, assessment, and implementation of curtain walling systems, underscoring its significant role in modern architectural practices.
