Overview

EN 50290-2-21:2001/A1:2007 (CENELEC) covers common design rules and construction requirements for PVC insulation compounds used in communication cables. This amendment (A1, approved 2007-03-01) updates the original part by introducing a new high‑temperature PVC grade (Grade TI55) and clarifying requirements such as lead‑free limits. The standard is intended for manufacturers, designers and test laboratories working with cable insulation materials in telecom and data applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Defines mechanical, thermal and electrical performance criteria for PVC insulation compounds intended for communication cables, and specifies test methods.
  • New grade TI55: Introduced for cables with a maximum rated temperature of 90 °C (can exceed to 105 °C with reduced lifetime). Typical TI55 requirements include:
    • Tensile strength (median, min): 15 MPa
    • Elongation at break (median, min): 150%
    • Ageing regime: 140 ±2 °C for 14 × 24 h
    • Heat shock: 150 °C for 6 h, no cracks
    • Pressure (high temperature) test at 90 ±2 °C
    • Low temperature behaviour: bend test at −15 ±2 °C, no cracks
    • Volume resistivity and thermal stability values specified where applicable
  • Lead‑free requirement: If lead‑free PVC is required, lead content shall be < 400 ppm, measured in accordance with EN 50414.
  • Referenced test standards: Uses EN 60811 series for mechanical, ageing, heat shock, pressure and shrinkage tests; EN 50414 for lead measurement; and annexes for electrical tests (volume resistivity).
  • Performance matrix: The standard provides a table of characteristic limits for different PVC grades (TI51–TI55), covering maximum rated temperature, density, hardness, tensile/elongation, loss of mass after ageing, heat shock, pressure test, low temperature behaviour, volume resistivity, thermal stability, shrinkage and dielectric constant (when required).

Applications and practical value

  • Guides cable designers and compound formulators in selecting PVC materials that meet required mechanical, thermal and electrical performance for telecom and data cables.
  • Used by manufacturers to specify insulation compounds and by test laboratories to verify compliance using EN 60811 test methods.
  • Useful for procurement/specification writers and compliance officers to ensure materials meet European harmonized criteria for reliable service life at rated temperatures (including higher‑temperature applications).
  • Relevant in projects where high temperature performance or lead‑free materials are required (e.g., indoor/outdoor telecommunication cabling, industrial data networks).

Related standards

  • EN 60811 series (material test methods referenced throughout)
