kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of a CENELEC draft amendment to the Primary batteries - Part 1: General standard. It updates the general rules for primary batteries, especially the terms used, the conformity checklist, and the test methods in Annex I for portable non-rechargeable batteries. The document is aimed at manufacturers, test laboratories, and conformity assessment teams working with primary cells and batteries and with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 amends the general part of the Primary batteries series. It focuses on how key terms are used, how certain battery performance and durability tests are carried out, and how the standard links to the Batteries Regulation.
The amendment is organized into three modification items and two annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex ZA | Normative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications |
| Annex ZZ | Relationship between the European Standard and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 |
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
The amendment mainly changes how the standard is used for compliance work on portable non-rechargeable batteries. It makes the Annex I test methods normative, updates the vocabulary in Clause 3, and ties the conformity checklist more closely to the Batteries Regulation.
Terms and definitions
Clause 3 adds notes to the terms cell, battery, minimum average duration, MAD, and leakage. In practice, these notes tell the reader that the standard keeps its own definitions rather than importing the wording from the Batteries Regulation, which matters when writing reports, declarations, or conformity files.
Clause 3 also adds the new term delayed discharge performance, DDP. DDP is the average discharge duration of a sample of batteries after storage under specified conditions, so it gives a named measure for post-storage performance.
Test methods and conformity
Clause 4.1.8 says that tests for performance and durability required for portable non-rechargeable batteries placed on the market in Europe under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 shall be performed according to Annex I. For users, that means the test method in Annex I is not just background information - it is the method to use for those regulatory checks.
Annex I is changed from informative to normative, and its requirements use shall throughout. That makes the annex a required test procedure rather than guidance, which is important for laboratory work and conformity assessment.
Annex I covers:
- average duration of discharge in I.6.1
- delayed discharge performance in I.6.2
- resistance to leakage in I.6.3
These are the main performance and durability checks for non-rechargeable portable batteries, so users need test evidence for both output and durability behavior.
Clause I.7 covers information on the average duration of non-rechargeable portable batteries. In practice, this supports the product information that needs to accompany batteries on the market.
Link to EU regulation
Annex ZZ links the standard to Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Once the standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, compliance with the normative clauses listed in Annex ZZ can support presumption of conformity within the standard’s scope, where the legal minimum values are met. That matters for market access, technical documentation, and audit trails.
What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 define?
- Cell - the basic electrochemical unit used in a battery; the amendment adds a note to keep this term aligned with the standard’s own meaning.
- Battery - an assembly made from one or more cells, with a note added so its use is clear alongside the Batteries Regulation.
- Minimum average duration, MAD - a performance measure based on the average duration of discharge across a sample.
- Leakage - the condition addressed by the leakage resistance requirement in Annex I.
- Delayed discharge performance, DDP - the average discharge duration of batteries after storage under specified conditions.
- Portable battery of general use - a portable battery type used as the reference category in Annex I and Annex ZZ.
Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
This amendment is used by organizations that design, test, supply, or assess primary batteries. Typical users include battery manufacturers, test laboratories, quality managers, regulatory specialists, and buyers specifying compliance evidence for portable non-rechargeable batteries.
It is especially relevant for work connected to the Batteries Regulation, because the document links test methods, terminology, and conformity evidence to that legal framework.
What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 from the previous edition?
Compared with the base European Standard FprEN IEC 60086-1, this amendment:
- changes Annex I from informative to normative
- replaces must with shall in Annex I
- adds notes to several Clause 3 definitions to address differences from the Batteries Regulation
- adds the new term delayed discharge performance, DDP
- replaces the opening sentence of 4.1.8 so that Annex I methods are the test methods for portable non-rechargeable batteries placed on the market in Europe under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
The amendment relies on the standards listed in Annex ZA and on the base part of the series it amends.
| Standard | Contribution |
|---|---|
| IEC 60086-2-1:2026 | Physical and electrical specifications of batteries with aqueous electrolyte |
| IEC 60086-2-2:2026 | Physical and electrical specifications of lithium batteries |
| IEC 60086-3:2021 | Watch batteries |
| IEC 60086-4:2025 | Safety of lithium batteries |
| IEC 60086-5:2021 | Safety of batteries with aqueous electrolyte |
What does the kSIST FprEN IEC 60086-1:2026/oprAA:2026 document contain?
The document contains amendment text for Clause 3, Clause 4.1.8, and Annex I, plus two new annexes. Annex I provides the measurement methods for performance and durability of non-rechargeable portable batteries, including discharge duration, delayed discharge performance, and leakage resistance.
Annex ZA gives the normative-reference mapping to related IEC and EN documents. Annex ZZ gives the correspondence table between the standard and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which is the part most readers use when checking whether a battery test report supports EU conformity work.
