Curtain Walling - Watertightness - Site test

This standard defines the method to be used to check for any points of water leakage that may occur in curtain walling when installed on a building. It is a supplementary test not required for classification purposes. It is intended for use primarily where water leaks have already occured. It may also be used on new installations, when specified.
It describes how an area of curtain walling that is installed on a building shall be subjected to a continuous film of water over its outside face
Windows and doors incorporated into the curtain walling may be similarly tested.
This standard applies to any curtain walling product as defined in prEN 13830.
NOTE   An alternative, more exhaustive test for watertightness of curtain walling, installed on a building, may be carried out. (See annex B).

Vorhangfassaden - Schlagregendichtheit - Feldversuch

Anwendungsbereich

Overview

SIST EN 13051:2002 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies a site testing method for watertightness of curtain walling installed on buildings. This standard is supplementary and primarily intended to identify existing water leaks in curtain wall systems, although it can also be applied to new installations when required. The testing method involves applying a continuous film of water to the exterior face of an installed curtain wall and checking for any water ingress on the interior side.

This standard applies universally to all curtain walling products as defined in the product standard prEN 13830 and includes windows and doors integrated into curtain wall assemblies. It is part of a broader family of curtain walling standards focused on product performance and onsite evaluation.

Key Topics

  • Scope of testing: Focuses on detecting water leakage by simulating rainwater exposure on installed curtain walls.
  • Test principle: Application of a constant, uniform water film on the external façade over a specified duration while monitoring for leaks inside.
  • Apparatus requirements:
    • Spray bar with nozzles spaced max 400 mm apart.
    • Water supply system capable of providing steady pressure between 2 and 3 bar.
    • Measurement devices to ensure accurate water flow rates (~5 l/min per metre of spray bar).
  • Test procedure:
    • Spray water uniformly for 30 minutes at specified flow rate.
    • Observe and record any water leakage inside the curtain wall.
    • Continue inspection for 30 minutes post-testing.
  • Leakage identification: Procedures described to isolate leakage points, including retesting at broken-down zones.
  • Reporting: Comprehensive test reports include specimen description, test parameters, leakage observations, and results.

Applications

  • Existing curtain walls: Especially valuable for troubleshooting water ingress problems after installation or during building maintenance.
  • New installations: Can be specified to verify watertight performance as an additional quality control measure.
  • Windows and doors: Incorporated elements within curtain walls may also be tested by the same procedure.
  • Building envelope verification: Supports overall façade performance assessments to prevent moisture-related deterioration and maintain building integrity.
  • Product conformity support: While not a classification test itself, it complements laboratory tests such as EN 12155 by confirming performance under real site conditions.

Related Standards

  • prEN 13830: Defines curtain walling product requirements and terminology, crucial for understanding the curtain wall systems covered by EN 13051.
  • EN 12155: Laboratory test for curtain wall watertightness under static pressure, providing a more exhaustive testing environment.
  • prEN 13119: Specifies terminology related to curtain walls, ensuring consistent definitions in testing and documentation.
  • Eurocode 1: Part 2.7: Used for determining design wind loads, which influence watertightness pressure testing criteria.

Keywords: EN 13051, curtain walling watertightness, site test, water leakage detection, façade testing, building envelope, prEN 13830, EN 12155, curtain wall testing standards, water ingress, construction quality control

By utilizing SIST EN 13051:2002, building professionals, façade contractors, and quality inspectors can effectively identify and manage water leakage issues in curtain wall installations, enhancing building durability and occupant comfort. This standard provides a practical and reproducible method to safeguard the performance of curtain walls against water penetration on-site.
