Overview

The SIST EN IEC 62841-2-19:2026/A11:2026 is an important European standard that specifies safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held jointers. This standard is part of the wider EN IEC 62841 series which covers safety aspects for hand-held, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. Its primary aim is to enhance user safety and reduce hazards associated with the operation and maintenance of hand-held jointers by specifying particular requirements that supplement the general safety requirements set out in EN 62841-1:2015.

This amendment A11 introduces common modifications to the base standard EN IEC 62841-2-19:2025, such as updates to normative references, marking and instruction guidelines, mechanical hazard provisions, measurement procedures for noise and vibration, and battery tool safety requirements. Compliance with this standard contributes to conformity with the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN IEC 62841-2-19:2025/A11 covers particular safety requirements for hand-held jointers, used in woodworking and related industries. These requirements apply alongside general provisions in EN 62841-1:2015.

  • Mechanical Hazards
Modifications include enhanced guarding systems allowing tool use only when protective guards are correctly closed, minimizing risks from moving parts and disc cutters.

  • Marking and Instructions
Detailed instructions on dimensions and types of disc cutters in line with EN 847-1:2017 are mandated for safe and correct tool use.

  • Noise and Vibration Measurement
The amendment updates standardized testing procedures for noise and vibration emissions, including specific test conditions like cutting grooves of defined dimensions in MDF.

  • Battery Tool Safety
New requirements for tools with integral batteries include mandatory isolation or disabling devices to prevent unintentional starting and protect users during servicing or maintenance.

  • Legal Compliance and Conformity
The standard provides a pathway for demonstrating compliance with EU machinery safety regulations, particularly Directive 2006/42/EC.

Applications

  • Woodworking Industry
Manufacturers and designers of electric hand-held jointers use this standard to ensure their products meet stringent safety and ergonomic requirements, thereby minimizing risks such as mechanical injury or exposure to excessive noise.

  • Tool Safety and Certification
The standard serves as a benchmark for certification bodies, safety inspectors, and regulatory authorities assessing the safety of hand-held jointers in the European market.

  • Maintenance and Servicing
Service personnel benefit from explicit requirements regarding isolation and disabling devices that help prevent accidents during tool maintenance or battery servicing.

  • Product Development
Tool developers integrate the normative references and testing procedures from this standard to improve design features relating to guarding, noise control, and battery safety for jointers.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 62841-1:2015
General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools and transportable tools, forming the base standard complemented and supplemented by Part 2-19.

  • EN 847-1:2017
Safety requirements for woodworking tools including milling tools and circular saw blades, referenced specifically for disc cutter specifications in hand-held jointers.

  • Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive)
The standard supports conformity with essential health and safety requirements outlined in this EU directive focused on machinery market safety.

  • Other Parts of EN IEC 62841 Series
The series includes other parts addressing specific tool types and their safety requirements, essential for manufacturers to consider depending on the tool category.

By ensuring conformity with SIST EN IEC 62841-2-19:2026/A11:2026, stakeholders promote safer operation, maintenance, and production of hand-held jointers, supporting health, safety, and regulatory compliance in the woodworking and power tool sectors. This amendment provides clarity on mechanical safety, acoustics, and battery tool handling, fostering innovation without compromising user protection.
