SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 is the SIST adoption of an ETSI harmonized European standard for Ground- and Wall-Probing Radar (GPR/WPR) imaging systems. It specifies the article 3.2 radio spectrum and electromagnetic compatibility requirements for these radars, mainly for competent professional users and the people who design, test and assess them.

What does SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 specify?

SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 covers GPR/WPR equipment that works in close proximity to the material being investigated. It is a harmonized EN for the R&TTE Directive, and it focuses on the radio and emission conditions needed for conformity.

The scope includes ground probing radars that radiate downward into the ground and wall probing radars that radiate into walls or other absorbing structures such as bridge sides or mine walls. It also covers equipment with integral antennas and equipment with interchangeable imaging heads and an antenna connector. The document excludes radars operated from aircraft or spacecraft.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ANormative HS Requirements and conformance Test specifications Table (HS-RTT)
Annex BInformative EN title in the official languages
Annex CInformative bibliography

The document is organized into scope, references, definitions, technical requirements, testing, and the annexes above.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008?

SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 ties conformity to declared operating conditions, limits on operation and emissions, and the test steps that demonstrate those limits. In practice, a manufacturer has to declare the operating environment and power conditions, then show that the equipment stays within the specified radio limits.

Operating conditions

Clause 4.1 requires the equipment to comply within the declared environmental profile, and the provider has to declare that profile. Clause 4.1.2 says the equipment has to meet all requirements over the declared power-supply conditions. This matters because the device must still conform in the real supply and environment it is sold for.

Radio limits

Clause 4.2.1 limits the frequency band of operation to the limits in EN 302 066-1. Clause 4.2.2 limits undesired emissions to the limits in EN 302 066-1. Clause 4.2.3 requires calculation of the maximum mean e.i.r.p. spectral density from peak measurements, and the result must stay within the limits in EN 302 066-1. In practice, these are the core spectrum checks for the product.

Deactivation and testing

Clause 4.2.4 points to the deactivation mechanism requirements in EN 302 066-1. Clause 5 says tests must be run at representative points within the declared environmental profile, and over a sufficient range when performance varies with environment. Clause 5.2 makes the frequency-band and undesired-emission tests part of the essential radio test suite, and clause 5.3 applies the interpretation of results and measurement uncertainty rules from EN 302 066-1.

Annex A shows which requirements are unconditional and which have essential tests. For this standard, the frequency-band and undesired-emissions rows are essential tests, while the maximum mean e.i.r.p. spectral density calculation and deactivation mechanism rows have no test specified in the table.

What terms does SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 define?

  • Environmental profile - the declared range of environmental conditions within which the equipment has to comply.
  • Ground Probing Radars (GPR) - radars used for survey and detection while radiating directly downward into the ground.
  • Wall Probing Radars (WPR) - radars used for survey and detection by radiating into a wall or similar structure.
  • Ground- and Wall-Probing Radar applications (GPR/WPR) - the equipment family covered by this standard.
  • maximum mean e.i.r.p. spectral density - the emissions metric calculated from peak measurements and checked against the limits.
  • HS-RTT - the table that links each essential requirement to its clause and test specification.

Who uses SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008?

SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 is used by manufacturers, integrators and compliance teams working on GPR/WPR imaging systems. Test laboratories use it to plan and report the radio tests in clause 5 and Annex A. It is also relevant to conformity assessors and technical file authors who need evidence for article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive.

What changed in SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 from the previous edition?

This revision is stated to fully comply with the new ECC DEC (06)08 on GPR/WPR and to add a reference to the combined equipment guide TR 102 070-2. The document history records an earlier publication as V1.1.1 and the present publication as V1.2.1.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008?

  • ETSI EN 302 066-1 (V1.2.1) - the companion part that provides the technical characteristics, test methods, emission limits, deactivation mechanism requirements and uncertainty rules used throughout this part.
  • ETSI EG 201 399 (V2.1.1) - the guide that shows the modular structure for ETSI standards under the R&TTE Directive.
  • ETSI TR 102 070-2 - the combined equipment guide referenced in the revision note.

What does the SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 document contain?

SIST EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1:2008 contains the technical requirements for operating band, undesired emissions, maximum mean e.i.r.p. spectral density and deactivation mechanism requirements. It also contains the compliance testing clauses for environmental conditions, the essential radio test suites, and the handling of measurement uncertainty. Annex A is the main requirements-to-test mapping table used for presumption of conformity work. Annex B gives the title in many official languages, and Annex C lists the bibliography and related policy documents.

Foreword
This Harmonized European Standard (Telecommunications series) has been produced by ETSI Technical Committee
Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM).
The present document has been produced by ETSI in response to a mandate from the European Commission issued
under Council Directive 98/34/EC (as amended) laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of
technical standards and regulations.
The present document is intended to become a Harmonized Standard, the reference of which will be published in the
Official Journal of the European Communities referencing the Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of
the Council of 9 March 1999 on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual
recognition of their conformity ("the R&TTE Directive").
The document responds to the EC mandate M/329 for Harmonized Standards covering Ultra-WideBand applications.
Technical specifications relevant to Directive 1999/5/EC are given in annex A.
The present document is part 2 of a multi-part deliverable covering the Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio
spectrum Matters (ERM); Ground- and Wall- Probing Radar applications, as identified below:
Part 1: "Technical characteristics and test methods";
Part 2: "Harmonized EN covering essential requirements of article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive".

Introduction
The present document is part of a set of standards developed by ETSI and is designed to fit in a modular structure to
cover all radio and telecommunications terminal equipment within the scope of the R&TTE Directive. The modular
structure is shown in EG 201 399 (see bibliography).

5 ETSI EN 302 066-2 V1.2.1 (2008-02)
1 Scope
The present document specifies the requirements for Ground- and Wall- Probing Radar imaging systems applications.
Ground Probing Radars (GPR) and Wall Probing Radars (WPR) are used in survey and detection applications.
The scope is limited to GPR and WPR radars, in which the system is in close proximity to the materials being
investigated. It does not include radars operated from aircraft or spacecraft.
The GPR/WPR applications in the present document are not intended for communications purposes, and the intended
signal is not radiated into free space.
NOTE: Equipment covered by the present document is intended to be used by competent professional personnel.
The present document applies to:
1) Ground Probing Radars (GPR) operating over approximately one decade in the frequency range
30 MHz to 12,4 GHz radiating directly downwards into the ground. Any horizontal radiation from this
equipment is caused by leakage and is considered as undesired emission.
2) Wall Probing Radars (WPR) operating in the frequency range 30 MHz to 12,4 GHz radiating directly into a
"wall". The "wall" is a building material structure, the side of a bridge, the wall of a mine or another physical
structure that absorbs a significant part of the signal transmitted by the radar.
3) Equipment fitted with integral antennas and without antenna connector.
4) Equipment which uses different imaging heads (antennas) with an antenna connector, to allow operation at
different frequencies.
The present document does not necessarily include all the characteristics which may be required by a user, nor does it
necessarily represent the optimum performance achievable.
In addition to the present document, other ENs that specify technical requirements in respect of essential requirements
under other parts of article 3 of the R&TTE Directive will apply to equipment within the scope of the present document.
2 References
References are either specific (identified by date of publication and/or edition number or version number) or
non-specific.
• For a specific reference, subsequent revisions do not apply.
• Non-specific reference may be made only to a complete document or a part thereof and only in the following
cases:
- if it is accepted that it will be possible to use all future changes of the referenced document for the
purposes of the referring document;
