Overview

SIST EN ISO 9862:2024 – Geosynthetics – Sampling and Preparation of Test Specimens is a European and international standard developed by CEN and ISO. This document provides general principles for the sampling of geosynthetics-materials primarily used in civil engineering and environmental applications-which are delivered to construction sites in the form of rolls or expandable panels. The standard also covers the proper preparation of test specimens from these samples to ensure consistency, reliability, and traceability in testing and quality assurance processes.

Geosynthetics are integral in modern construction, used for functions such as separation, filtration, reinforcement, protection, and drainage. Consistent sampling and preparation are critical to guarantee materials perform as specified and to facilitate compliance with project requirements and regulations.

Key Topics

SIST EN ISO 9862:2024 addresses the following main areas:

  • Sampling Procedures:

    • Selection criteria for rolls and panels at construction sites
    • Exclusion of damaged or improperly wrapped products (unless assessing defects)
    • Guidance on where to cut samples from rolled or panel products (e.g., avoiding outer layers)
  • Preparation of Test Specimens:

    • Steps to ensure physical integrity of samples prior to testing
    • Recommendations for storage and transport (e.g., keeping samples dry, dark, and at ambient temperature)
    • Even distribution of specimens from across the material, avoiding edges and defects
  • Identification and Traceability:

    • Sample identification in accordance with ISO 10320
    • Clear labeling and reporting to maintain traceability through the testing lifecycle
  • Reporting Requirements:

    • Mandatory inclusion of sampling and preparation details in compliance with the standard
    • Documentation of deviations, observations, and any encountered defects
  • Product Forms Covered:

    • Geosynthetics supplied as rolls or expandable panels
    • References for products in sheet form, aligning with ISO 186

Applications

The standard's principles are essential across a broad range of geosynthetics applications, including:

  • Construction: Quality control of geotextile fabrics, geogrids, geomembranes, and related products used in road building, embankments, and foundations
  • Environmental Engineering: Testing geosynthetics for landfill liners, erosion control, and containment systems
  • Infrastructure Projects: Sampling geosynthetics for drainage and stabilization layers in projects such as railways, airports, and water management systems
  • Product Certification and Compliance: Ensuring that products delivered and tested meet project specifications and regulatory standards
  • Quality Assurance and Dispute Resolution: Providing standardized methods for sample selection and preparation to resolve claims or performance concerns

By following SIST EN ISO 9862:2024, stakeholders-including manufacturers, contractors, and testing laboratories-can achieve reliable and comparable test results, enhancing overall project quality and risk management.

Related Standards

For comprehensive application and further reference, the following international standards are closely related to SIST EN ISO 9862:2024:

  • ISO 10320: Geosynthetics - Identification on site (sample identification and traceability)
  • ISO 10318-1: Geosynthetics - Part 1: Terms and definitions (terminology)
  • ISO 186: Paper and board - Sampling to determine average quality (relevant for products supplied in sheet form)
  • ASTM D6072/D6072M: Standard Practice for Obtaining Samples of Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs)

Implementing SIST EN ISO 9862:2024 in line with these standards supports best practices in the selection, testing, and documentation processes crucial to the performance and compliance of geosynthetic materials in diverse construction and environmental applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use
of (a) patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed
patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received
notice of (a) patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are
cautioned that this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent
