(Main)Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM); ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standard for radio equipment and services; Part 32: Specific conditions for Ground and Wall Probing Radar applications
General Information
- Abstract
The present document, together with EN 301 489-1 [1] covers the assessment of Ground and Wall-Probing Radar applications (GPR and WPR) and ancillary equipment in respect of ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Technical specifications related to the antenna port and emissions from the enclosure port of GPR and WPR are not included in the present document. Such technical specifications are found in the relevant product standards for the effective use of the radio spectrum. The present document specifies the applicable test conditions, performance assessment, and performance criteria for GPR and WPR and the associated ancillary equipment.
Definitions of the types of GPR and WPR covered by the present document are given in annex A. In case of differences (for instance concerning special conditions, definitions, abbreviations) between the present document and the EN 301 489-1 [1], the provisions of the present document take precedence. The environmental classification and the emission and immunity requirements used in the present document are as stated in the EN 301 489-1 [1], except for any special conditions included in the present document.

Overview
SIST EN 301 489-32 V1.1.1:2006 is a harmonized European standard developed by SIST, based on ETSI EN 301 489-32, which sets out specific requirements for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in relation to Ground Probing Radar (GPR) and Wall Probing Radar (WPR) equipment and their ancillary devices. These types of radar, often referred to as Ground Penetrating Radar and Wall Scanning Radar, are vital tools for investigating sub-surface conditions and structures. The standard ensures that equipment used for such applications meets EMC requirements, minimizing electromagnetic interference and ensuring reliable operations in diverse environments.
This document is intended to be used alongside EN 301 489-1, which specifies common technical EMC requirements for radio equipment and services. SIST EN 301 489-32 focuses on the unique operational conditions and assessment criteria for GPR and WPR equipment, aiming to harmonize electromagnetic emissions and immunity and support compliance with the latest European EMC and radio equipment directives.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
The standard applies to GPR and WPR equipment and their auxiliary devices, detailing test conditions, assessment procedures, and performance criteria specific to these technologies. It does not address antenna port and enclosure emissions, which are covered by relevant product standards.Definitions
Defines Ground Probing Radar (GPR) as equipment for subsurface examination, and Wall Probing Radar (WPR) as systems for non-invasive analysis of wall structures. Further technical definitions and abbreviations are provided for clarity across the GPR and WPR application areas.Test Conditions and Arrangements
Test procedures include requirements for emissions and immunity, with stipulations for different device configurations, including those with interchangeable imaging heads. Operational status verification through analogue or digital monitoring is necessary during testing.Performance Assessment
The standard outlines performance assessment criteria, including maintaining device function, recovery from disruptions, and handling of unintended behaviors. Both continuous and transient disturbances are addressed through tailored performance criteria.Emission and Immunity Requirements
Reference is made to EN 301 489-1 for environmental classification and baseline EMC requirements, ensuring a consistent European approach to electromagnetic emissions and the immunity of radio equipment.
Applications
Geological and Sub-surface Surveys
GPR equipment is widely used in geophysical examinations, utility detection, civil engineering, and archaeological explorations to analyze materials beneath the ground without excavation.Building and Infrastructure Assessment
WPR systems support structural analysis, non-destructive testing, and safety assessments in construction and maintenance contexts by providing detailed imaging of materials within walls.Regulatory Compliance
Manufacturers and test labs rely on this EMC standard to ensure products meet the necessary EMC regulations and requirements for market access within the European Union and EFTA.Product Development and Certification
Guidance provided by SIST EN 301 489-32 helps product developers, system integrators, and certification bodies design, test, and validate GPR and WPR systems for robust, compliant deployment.
