Kmetijski in gozdarski stroji - Medvrstne zastiralne kosilnice - Varnost

Overview

EN 13448:2001+A1:2009 (CEN) defines safety requirements and test methods for inter‑row mowing units - rotary mowers with vertical spindles and pivoting booms mounted on grass‑cutting machines (for example on flail mowers) used in agriculture, forestry and landscaping to cut grass between successive obstructions (trees, posts, etc.). The standard describes risk reduction measures, required manufacturer information (instruction handbook, marking) and specific test procedures (notably the thrown‑object test). It excludes rotary mowers and flail‑mowers covered by EN 745, environmental aspects, and machines manufactured before the CEN publication date.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and terminology: Type C standard (per EN 1070) covering hazards specific to inter‑row mowing units; general hazards addressed by EN 1553 and EN 292 series.
  • Blade enclosure: An imperforate guard covering cutting elements, providing at least 50 mm beyond the external cutting trajectory and at least 3 mm below the blade tip circle. Enclosure must be free of sharp edges.
  • Structural strength: Blade enclosure shall resist a 1200 N vertical downwards load and horizontal loads of 600 N (machines for tractors ≤ 37 kW) or 1 000 N (other machines), verified by referenced test procedures.
  • Hose protection: Hydraulic/pneumatic hoses must be routed and retained to minimize damage; hoses >5 MPa (50 bar) or >50 °C within 1 m of the operator must be guarded in accordance with EN ISO 3457.
  • Thrown‑object test: Defined target panels (kraft paper on frames), specified test material (50% sand, 25% gravel 8–16 mm, 25% gravel 16–31.5 mm), pile placement and run procedures. Acceptance: limited impacts in the middle zone (≤2 per 1 000 mm sector), no impacts in the upper zone or operator zone.
  • Noise: Measurement method referenced to EN 1553:1999 (annex D); fuller noise provisions reserved for future revision.
  • Information for use: Required instruction handbook content and marking to inform safe working practices.

Applications

  • Ensures safe design, manufacture and testing of inter‑row mowing units used in:
    • Vineyard and orchard maintenance
    • Landscaping between posts, hedges or tree rows
    • Forestry understorey and strip mowing
  • Useful for OEM design teams, safety engineers, test laboratories, conformity assessors and procurement/specification authors aiming to meet European safety requirements.

Who should use this standard

  • Agricultural machinery manufacturers and designers
  • Test houses conducting thrown‑object and structural tests
  • Compliance and CE‑marking specialists
  • Farm machinery safety officers and equipment buyers
