Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-9:2003/A13:2011 is a European standard amendment developed by CENELEC focusing on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical cooking appliances, specifically grills, toasters, and similar portable devices. This standard complements the base standard EN 60335-2-9:2003 by updating safety clauses to address common hazards encountered in domestic environments and ensuring protection for a wide range of users, including vulnerable groups.

This standard provides detailed safety and testing protocols to ensure that grills, toasters, sandwich makers, and portable cooking appliances are safe for everyday household use. It emphasizes safe operational use, marking, instruction clarity, and mechanical and thermal hazard prevention.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Use:
This amendment covers typical hazards associated with grills, toasters, and similar portable cooking appliances in household environments. It recognizes the limitations related to very young children, who are not expected to use appliances unsupervised, and highlights the necessity of supervision or instruction for vulnerable users.

  • User Safety Definitions:

    • Children include very young children (0-36 months), young children (3-8 years), and older children (8-14 years).
    • Vulnerable and very vulnerable people are defined based on physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments, requiring supervision or adaptation of appliances beyond this standard’s scope.
  • Marking and Instructions:
Appliances must carry clear safety markings, including “CAUTION: Hot surface” warnings or the IEC 60417-5041 symbol on the hottest parts visible during normal use.
User instructions must be clear, prominently presented (minimum 4 mm character height), accessible in alternative formats, and include guidance for safe use and supervision requirements, especially concerning children and vulnerable individuals.

  • Protection Against Live Parts and Mechanical Hazards:
Testing requires the use of specific probes (EN 61032 test probes) applied with varying forces to ensure no accessible live parts or mechanical risks during normal use. Appliances must be fully assembled to simulate real-use conditions.

  • Heating and Temperature Limits:
Specific temperature rise limits are established for different types of appliance surfaces (metal, plastic, glass), with allowances for warning markings if maximum temperature limits cannot be met due to design constraints.
Multiple testing protocols (11.Z101 to 11.Z105) address the unique heating characteristics of ovens, toasters, grills, sandwich makers, and roasters.

  • Stability and Construction:
Appliances must pass stability tests using probes to simulate user interaction, preventing tipping or mechanical hazards such as ingestion or choking risks for vulnerable users.
The construction requirements also emphasize the elimination of hazards related to size and removable parts.

Applications

The SIST EN 60335-2-9:2003/A13:2011 standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and product designers engaged with:

  • Portable cooking appliances such as grills, toasters, sandwich makers, and roasters.
  • Products intended for home kitchens, similar domestic environments, and vulnerable user groups.
  • Designing safe household electrical appliances that comply with European safety regulations, enhancing consumer confidence.
  • Ensuring product markings, user manuals, and instruction clarity meet stringent safety communication standards.
  • Testing protocols related to electrical safety, thermal safety, mechanical integrity, and usability.
