Relations
Overview
EN 50363-3:2005 specifies the physical-property requirements for PVC insulating compounds used in low-voltage energy cables. It complements EN 50363-0 and references test methods from the EN 60811 series and EN 50395. The standard defines compound types (TI1–TI5) and the mandatory tests and limits that manufacturers, test labs and specifiers use to verify material performance.
Key Topics
Compound types and maximum operating temperature (Table 1)
- TI 1 - General purpose (max 70 °C)
- TI 2 - Flexible (including transparent) (max 70 °C)
- TI 3 - Heat resistant (max 90 °C)
- TI 4 - For installation at low temperatures (max 70 °C)
- TI 5 - General purpose flexible for lower temperature use (max 70 °C)
Mechanical and thermal requirements (Table 2)
- Tensile strength (before ageing): median minimum values are specified (e.g. TI1 12.5 N/mm², TI2 10.0 N/mm², TI3 15.0 N/mm²).
- Elongation at break (before ageing): median minimum values (e.g. 125 % for TI1, 150 % for TI2 and TI3).
- Ageing in air oven: defined temperatures and durations (commonly 80 ± 2 °C for 7 x 24 h; TI3 uses higher temperature and longer exposure) with limits on variation after ageing.
- Loss of mass: maximum loss limits after specified ageing (e.g. TI3 has a stricter limit than general types).
- Heat shock and pressure tests: checks for cracking and indentation under load at elevated temperatures.
- Low-temperature performance: bending and elongation tests at specified low temperatures (e.g. TI4 tested at −40 ± 2 °C, TI5 at −30 ± 2 °C) with minimum elongation without break (typically 30 %).
- Minimum thermal stability and insulation resistance: stability checks at elevated temperature and insulation resistance testing per EN 50395.
Referenced test standards: EN 60811 series (material test methods) and EN 50395 for insulation resistance are integral to implementation.
Applications
EN 50363-3:2005 is used by:
- Cable manufacturers for formulation control and certification of PVC insulating compounds.
- Quality and compliance laboratories performing mechanical, thermal and ageing tests.
- Specifiers and procurement teams selecting cable materials for installations requiring defined heat or low-temperature performance.
- Product development teams benchmarking new PVC formulations against European requirements.
The standard supports consistent performance in service - improving reliability, durability and predictable thermal behaviour of low-voltage energy cables.
Related Standards

- EN 60811 (series) - Material test methods referenced throughout Table 2.
- EN 50395 - Insulation resistance test method referenced by EN 50363-3.
Practical note: consult the full EN 50363-3:2005 text and the referenced EN 60811 clauses for test procedures, sampling and interpretation of results before implementing compliance testing or material acceptance criteria.
