Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is information given for the convenience of users and does not
constitute an endorsement.
For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and
expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see
www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 10 Technical product documentation
(TPD)/SC1 Basic conventions.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.

Introduction
This document is a Technical product documentation (TPD) standard and is to be regarded as a
complementary standard.
Technical product specification (TPS) expresses the functional requirements from the designer, and is
used by many stakeholders throughout a product’s lifecycle:
— Functional specification
— Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
— Tolerance stack-up
— Design transfer
— Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
— Inspection report
— Concessions
— Failure investigations
— Engineering change requests
In order to facilitate communication in these situations, it is essential to share the same name for each
specification in the TPS. The purpose of this document is to give graphical symbols and rules for naming
of specifications in the TPS. See Annex A for examples how to use the names of specifications.

DRAFT INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO/DIS 7533:2023(E)
Technical product documentation (TPD) — Naming the
specifications in the Technical product specification (TPS)
1 Scope
This document gives rules to name specifications in the Technical product specification (TPS). It may
be applied, if needed, to facilitate communication.
2 Normative references
The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For
undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
ISO 128 (series), Technical product documentation — General principles of representation
ISO 129-1:2018, Technical product documentation (TPD) — Presentation of dimensions and tolerances —
Part 1: General principles
ISO 3098-5:1998, Technical product documentation — Lettering — Part 5: CAD lettering of the Latin
alphabet, numerals and marks
ISO 10209:2022, Technical product documentation — Vocabulary — Terms relating to technical drawings,
product definition and related documentation
ISO 7449 NW, Unique Integral Surface Identification
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 10209 and the following apply.
ISO and IEC maintain terminological databases for use in standardization at the following addresses:
— ISO Online browsing platform: available at https:// www .iso .org/ obp
— IEC Electropedia: available at https:// www .electropedia .org/
4 General
The user may choose only to identify those specifications in the TPS needed with a unique name.
However, the user should identify all specifications of the entire TPS in order to take the full advantage
of the naming.
A specification in the TPS can be a:
— Geometrical specification,
— Size specification,
— Surface texture specification,
— Surface imperfection,
— Edge of undefined shape,
oSIST prEN ISO 7533:2023
ISO/DIS 7533:2023(E)
— Transition specification,
— Appearance specification,
— Material specification,
— Process specification,
— Assembly specification,
— Molding requirement,
— Welding requirement,
— Heat treatment requirement.
Indications that do not define a specification could also be named if needed.
NOTE The following indications do not define a specification (non-exhaustive list).
— Theoretically Exact Dimensions (TEDs),
— auxiliary dimensions,
— flag notes,
When each specification in each document has been named following the rules given in Clauses 5 and 6,
each specification in the TPS is uniquely named by:
— One TPD identifier
— One specification identifier
5 Naming specifications
5.1 Graphical symbol for indicating the name of specifications
Each specification that the user wants to name, shall be named in each document by a positive integer
number placed between ‘less than’ character, <, and ‘greater than’ character, > (see ISO 3098-5:1998
character number 309 and 310), see Figure 1.
NOTE 1 Using < and > will help users searching specification names in alphanumeric documents.
NOTE 2 In a Model Based Definition, the names could be either in a metadata or visible on the drawing, or
both.
