Overview

SIST EN IEC 61643-41:2025/A11:2025 defines the requirements and test methods for low-voltage surge protective devices (SPDs) connected to DC low-voltage power systems. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard is identical to the European Standard EN IEC 61643-41:2025/A11:2025, focusing on the safety, reliability, and performance of SPDs in direct current (DC) applications. As modern infrastructure increasingly relies on DC systems, ensuring robust surge protection is essential for protecting sensitive equipment and maintaining operational continuity.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Implementation: This amendment applies to surge protective devices (SPDs) specifically designed for use in DC low-voltage power systems. It stipulates mandatory requirements and consistent test methods to ensure device conformity.
  • Normative References: The standard references key international documents, primarily IEC 61643-01, addressing general requirements and specific test procedures for surge protection.
  • Safety and Compliance: The amendment aligns with European legislation, specifically with the safety objectives outlined in Directive 2014/35/EU, the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). It describes how compliance with this standard leads to a presumption of conformity with the LVD safety requirements.
  • Modification to the Scope: Previous exclusions based on risk assessments or national regulations have been updated, streamlining the requirements for SPDs in various DC applications.

Applications

  • Renewable Energy Systems: With the growing use of photovoltaic (PV) and other renewable sources, SPDs are critical for protecting DC power systems from transient overvoltages resulting from lightning or grid fluctuations.
  • Industrial Automation: Automated and process control systems increasingly use DC power supplies, requiring consistent surge protection to prevent costly downtime and equipment failure.
  • Telecommunications: Protecting low-voltage DC supply systems in telecom infrastructure ensures service reliability and reduces maintenance caused by transient surges.
  • E-Mobility and Transportation: Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and railway applications that depend on DC circuits benefit from the targeted requirements and robust test methods established in this standard.
  • Data Centers and IT Facilities: Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and modular data centers need approved and tested SPDs for DC lines, ensuring the protection of critical IT equipment.

Related Standards

For comprehensive surge protective measures and compliance, refer to the following related standards:

  • IEC 61643-01: General requirements and test methods for low-voltage surge protective devices
  • EN IEC 61643-21: Surge protective devices for low-voltage communication and signaling networks
  • EN IEC 62305 Series: Lightning protection standards for structures and electrical systems
  • EN 50539-11: Requirements for SPDs specifically for photovoltaic installations
  • Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive): European legislation concerning the safety of electrical equipment within certain voltage limits

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN IEC 61643-41:2025/A11:2025 ensures that surge protective devices in DC low-voltage systems meet the latest European and international requirements. This enhances safety, supports regulatory compliance, and helps manufacturers and system integrators mitigate risks associated with transient overvoltages. Stakeholders-including designers, installers, and facility operators-benefit by reducing downtime, securing sensitive equipment, and ensuring continuity of essential services across various industrial, commercial, and infrastructural applications.

Adhering to this standard is essential for organizations committed to best practices in surge protection and compliance with evolving electrical safety requirements.
