Overview

EN ISO 22391-1:2009 - Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations - specifies the general requirements for piping systems made from polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE‑RT), Type I and Type II. It applies to PE‑RT pipes, fittings and joints used in building hot and cold water (domestic and heating) systems, defining service classes, design pressures, pipe dimension classes, test parameters and essential terms. This is Part 1 (General) of the ISO 22391 series and is intended to be used together with Parts 2 (Pipes), 3 (Fittings) and 5 (Fitness for purpose).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Material scope: PE‑RT Type I and Type II materials for potable and non‑potable water applications, with attention to potential effects on water quality.
  • Classification of service conditions: Defines classes of application and corresponding design pressures and temperatures appropriate to each class.
  • Geometrical and dimensional terms: Defines nominal size (DN/DN‑OD), outside diameter (d), wall thickness (en), pipe series (S) and calculated pipe value (Scalc).
  • Pipe dimensioning: Covers pipe dimension classes and the universal wall thickness reference (ISO 4065) for practical sizing.
  • Test parameters and performance: Specifies the tests and performance requirements that system components must meet (pipes, fittings, joints).
  • Jointing and compatibility: Applicable to joints that incorporate PE‑RT components and joints combining PE‑RT with other plastics or non‑plastics materials.
  • Normative references and definitions: Incorporates key referenced standards (ISO 472, ISO 1043‑1, ISO 4065) and a glossary of terms and symbols used across the series.
  • Limitations: Not applicable to design temperatures or malfunction temperatures exceeding those specified; selection must consider national regulations and installation practices.

Applications and who uses it

  • Primary users: Product manufacturers, plumbing and heating system designers, specifiers, installers, testing laboratories, building services engineers and regulators.
  • Typical applications: Domestic cold and hot water distribution, underfloor heating and other low‑temperature heating circuits within buildings.
  • Practical value: Helps ensure material selection, pipe sizing, joint compatibility and system fitness for purpose meet internationally harmonized requirements - aiding product certification, project specifications and compliance with national codes.

ISO 22391-1:2009(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 22391-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 138, Plastics pipes, fittings and valves for the
transport of fluids, Subcommittee SC 2, Plastics pipes and fittings for water supplies.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 22391-1:2007), which is extended from only
dealing with PE-RT material (referred to as Type I) to cover PE-RT materials Type I and Type II.

ISO 22391 consists of the following parts , under the general title Plastics piping systems for hot and cold
water installations — Polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT):
⎯ Part 1: General
⎯ Part 2: Pipes
⎯ Part 3: Fittings
⎯ Part 5: Fitness for purpose of the system

The article discusses ISO standard 22391-1, which specifies the characteristics of polyethylene of raised temperature resistance (PE-RT) piping systems. The standard covers two types of PE-RT, Type I and Type II, which are used for hot and cold water installations in buildings. It applies to both domestic water systems and heating systems, and includes various service conditions, design pressures, and pipe dimension classes. The standard also covers test parameters and defines terms. It is applicable to PE-RT pipes, fittings, and joints, as well as joints with components made of PE-RT or other materials used in hot and cold water installations.
