General Information
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the requirements of fitness for purpose of the unplasticized polyamide (PA-U) piping system, intended to be buried and used for the supply of gaseous fuels. It also specifies the definitions of electrofusion and butt fusion joints.
This part of ISO 16486 specifies the method of preparation of test piece joints and the tests to be carried out on these joints for assessing the fitness for purpose of the system under normal and extreme conditions. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods to which it refers.
ISO 16486 is applicable to PA-U piping systems the components of which are connected by fusion jointing and/or mechanical jointing.
In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 16486, it is applicable to PA-U fittings, their joints and to joints with components of PA-U.

In the field of non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage this is reflected in the marking of products by application code "U" and "UD":

This document covers also installation and/or connections to valves, manholes, inspection chambers, gullies and other ancillary components in piping systems.
NOTE 1 Code of practise for pipelines for gas supply is covered by EN 12007-series [21].
NOTE 2 Recommended practices for installation of plastic piping systems for soil and waste discharge within the building structure is covered by CEN/TR 13801 [12].
NOTE 3 Practices for underground installation of rainwater infiltration and storage attenuation systems are covered by CEN/TR 17179 [13].
NOTE 4 It is assumed that additional recommendations and/or requirements are detailed in the individual product standards.
NOTE 5 If non-plastic components are part of the plastic system the manufacturer's instructions should be taken into account.
Requirements and instructions concerning commissioning of systems can be found in EN 805 and EN 1610 and the relevant national and/or local regulations. This document gives specific additional recommendations for commissioning relevant for plastic piping systems.

This document specifies the requirements for solid wall pipes with smooth internal and external surfaces, extruded from the same formulation throughout the wall, fittings and the system of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) piping systems intended for soil and waste discharge applications (low and high temperature):
- inside buildings (application area code "B");
- for both inside buildings and buried in ground within the building structure (application area code "BD").
NOTE 1 The intended use is reflected in the marking of products by "B" or "BD".
NOTE 2 Multilayer pipes with different formulations throughout the wall and foamed core pipes are covered by EN 1453-1 [1].
NOTE 3 For use buried in ground within the building structure are intended only those components (marked with "BD") with nominal outside diameters equal to or greater than 75 mm.
NOTE 4 EN 476 [2] specifies the general requirements for components used in discharge pipes, drains and sewers for gravity systems. Pipes and fittings conforming to this standard fully meet these requirements.
This document is also applicable to PVC-U pipes, fittings and the system intended for the following purposes:
- ventilating part of the pipework in association with discharge applications;
- rainwater pipework within the building structure.
This document also specifies the test parameters for the test method that are referred to.
This document covers a range of nominal sizes, a range of pipes and fittings series and gives recommendations concerning colours.
NOTE 5 It is the responsibility of the purchaser or specifier to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national regulations and installation practices or codes.
For external above ground application additional requirements depending on the climate should be agreed between the manufacturer and the user.

Manholes and inspection chambers complying with EN 13598-2 are made from a prescribed set of components that are manufactured from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U), polypropylene (PP), polypropylene with mineral modifier (PP-MD) or polyethylene (PE) and assembled together.
NOTE 5 The complete manhole or inspection chamber assembly may also include non-plastic items (near surface or surface components for example) which are not covered by this document.
NOTE 6 Manholes and inspection chambers may be supplied with covers, frame covers and gratings complying with the relevant part of EN 124 [1].
Manholes and inspection chambers complying with EN 13598-2 comply with the general requirements given in EN 476.
Manholes and inspection chambers complying with EN 13598-2 may be used for storm-water systems.
Manhole and inspection chamber components can be manufactured by various methods e.g. extrusion, injection moulding, rotational moulding, low-pressure moulding or fabricated.
NOTE 7 Manholes and inspection chambers can be site assembled from different components, but can also be manufactured as a single unit.

It also covers the jointing of the ancillary fittings and shallow chambers to the pipework system.
The ancillary fittings covered by this standard are the following:
- sealed access fittings;
- rodding point covers;
- rodding tees;
- mechanical saddles.
Ancillary fittings according to this document are intended for use in pedestrian or vehicular traffic areas.
Ancillary fittings can be installed to a maximum depth of 6,0 m from ground level, with the exception of rodding point covers.
Shallow chambers according to this document are intended for use in private drains located in pedestrian areas above the ground water table, to a maximum depth of 2,0 m from ground level to the invert of the main channel. This document covers shallow chambers with flow profile bases, and their joints to the piping system.
NOTE 1 EN 124-series [1] and EN 1253-4 [2] covers may be used for shallow chambers.
NOTE 2 Manholes and inspection chambers are specified in EN 13598-2.
Ancillary fittings and shallow chambers complying with EN13598-1 comply with the general requirements given in EN 476.
Ancillary fittings and shallow chambers can be manufactured by various methods e.g. injection moulding, rotational moulding, spiral winding or fabricated from components made to other standards.
NOTE 3 Product complying with this document may be used with pipes, fittings and other components conforming to any of the plastics products standards listed in Clause 2, provided their dimension comply with the requirements for joint dimensions given in Clause 7 and to the requirements of Table 6.
