SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2. It specifies environmental test methods and severities for telecommunications equipment used in stationary installations at non-weatherprotected locations. In practice, it helps designers, test labs and buyers verify whether equipment can resist the climatic, mechanical and earthquake conditions linked to the relevant environmental class.
What does SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 specify?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 specifies the environmental tests used to verify resistibility for stationary telecommunications equipment at non-weatherprotected locations. The document is tied to the environmental classes in EN 300 019-1-4 and gives the test methods and severities to apply for those classes.
The document is organized into these main parts:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - References
- Clause 3 - Environmental test specifications
- Clause 4 - Earthquake test specification
- Clause 5 - Notes to tables
- Annex A - Bibliography
Clause 3 is split into separate specifications for T 4.1, T 4.1E, T 4.2L and T 4.2H, plus the mechanical tests that apply across those classes. Clause 4 adds earthquake testing when a customer requires it, and clause 5 explains how to read the table notes.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006?
General test setup
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 assumes that the equipment is normally in operational state during the tests unless stated otherwise. The product specification has to define what performance is expected before, during and after each test, and the test conditions should be set up to load the equipment fully.
That matters because the standard is not just about surviving a lab condition. It also requires the equipment to be exercised in a realistic way so the test shows whether it still works as intended.
Climatic test specifications
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 defines four climatic test packages:
- T 4.1 - stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations, for most of Europe
- T 4.1E - extended stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations, for most of Europe
- T 4.2L - extremely cold locations, for world-wide use
- T 4.2H - extremely warm dry locations, for world-wide use
These packages combine tests for cold, dry heat, change of temperature, damp heat, rain, solar radiation, chemically active substances, mechanically active substances, flora and fauna. In practice, a user selects the class that matches the installation site and then applies the test set named for that class.
Mechanical tests
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 includes mechanical testing for vibration and shock. Clause 3.5 covers sinusoidal vibration, random vibration, bump and shock, and it relates them to IEC 60721-3-4 mechanical classes 4M3 and 4M5.
The equipment under test is mounted in the in-use position and its function is monitored during the test. For a reader, this means the mounting arrangement and cable or connection setup matter, because the test is meant to represent the installed condition rather than a loose specimen.
Earthquake testing
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 adds an earthquake test when the customer specifies earthquake conditions. This applies to classes 4.1, 4.1E, 4.2L and 4.2H.
Clause 4 starts with a vibration response investigation, using either sine sweep or random testing, to identify the lowest resonant frequency of the mounted specimen. If the equipment shows no resonance below 5 Hz and already passes the class 4M5 sinusoidal vibration test, the time-history test can be omitted. The actual earthquake test uses a required response spectrum and references a time-history method in IEC 60068-2-57.
How to read the table notes
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 uses notes to explain why some conditions are tested and others are not. Some effects are covered indirectly, such as rain cooling being covered in the temperature change test, and some conditions are treated as design considerations rather than separate tests, such as chemically active substances and mechanically active substances.
For a practical user, the notes matter because they tell you when the document expects a test, when a special case needs one, and when the product specification must set the pass/fail criteria more precisely.
What terms does SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 define?
- Environmental Engineering (EE) is the ETSI subject area covering environmental classification and testing for telecommunications equipment.
- Acceleration Spectral Density (ASD) is the measure used to state random vibration severity in the mechanical test notes.
- Required Response Spectrum (RRS) is the target earthquake response spectrum used in the time-history method.
- Zero Period Acceleration (ZPA) is the earthquake parameter used in Table 6 to describe the flat high-frequency level of the response spectrum.
- T 4.1E is the extended environmental class for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations, used for a broader climatic envelope than T 4.1.
- T 4.2L is the environmental class for extremely cold stationary installations at non-weatherprotected locations.
- T 4.2H is the environmental class for extremely warm dry stationary installations at non-weatherprotected locations.
Who uses SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 is used by telecommunications equipment manufacturers, environmental test laboratories, quality managers, and buyers or specifiers who need to define outdoor installation requirements. It is also useful for product engineers writing test plans and product specifications, because the document tells them which environmental class to target and which test methods to apply.
The standard is most relevant when equipment is intended for stationary use outside weather protection, where the installer's concern is not only function, but also resistibility to climate, vibration, shock and earthquake conditions.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 300 019-1-4 | The environmental conditions and classes for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations. |
| IEC 60068-2 | The test methods used for cold, dry heat, temperature change, damp heat, rain, vibration and shock. |
| ETSI EN 300 019-2-0 | The general overview of Part 2 of the EN 300 019 series. |
| IEC 60721-3-4 | The mechanical environmental classes used in the vibration and shock notes. |
| ANSI T1.329-2000 | The Verteq II time-history signal used for earthquake testing. |
| ETSI ETR 035 | Guidance and terminology for environmental engineering. |
What does the SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.2.2:2006 contains test specification tables for climatic conditions, mechanical tests and earthquake testing. The climatic tables list the environmental parameters, test methods and severities for T 4.1, T 4.1E, T 4.2L and T 4.2H.
The document also contains the earthquake procedure, including vibration response investigation, the time-history method, Figure 1 for the Required Response Spectrum, and Table 7 for the spectrum co-ordinates. Clause 5 then explains the meaning of the table notes so the user can judge when a test is required, when a value is only a characteristic severity, and how the product specification should set operational criteria.
