Abstract

The present document defines classes of environmental conditions and their severities to which telecommunication equipment may be exposed during storage. The severities specified are those which will have a low probability of being exceeded; generally less than 1 %. NOTE 1: Temporary storage during transport is included in part 1-2: Transportation. NOTE 2: If the equipment is stored in its package, the environmental conditions apply to the packaged equipment.

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of the ETSI Environmental Engineering standard for telecommunications equipment in storage. It classifies the environmental conditions and severities that stored equipment may face, so engineers, manufacturers, buyers, and test labs can match storage requirements to the real site. The severities are chosen as conditions with a low probability of being exceeded.

What does SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 specify?

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 specifies standardized environmental classes for storage of telecommunications equipment, together with the severities associated with those classes. It also shows how the standard is organized, with clauses for scope, references, definitions, environmental classes, and environmental conditions, plus an informative bibliography.

The scope makes two practical points. Temporary storage during transport belongs to Part 1-2, and when equipment is stored in its package, the environmental conditions apply to the packaged equipment.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006?

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 is mainly a classification standard rather than a test method standard. Clause 4 defines the storage environment classes, and Clause 5 gives the environmental parameters used to describe them.

Storage classes in Clause 4

Clause 4 defines three main storage situations: weatherprotected partly temperature-controlled storage, weatherprotected not temperature-controlled storage, and non-weatherprotected storage. A special extended class, 1.3E, is also defined for more severe open-air storage conditions.

In practice, these classes help a user decide whether a storage site is sheltered, partly conditioned, fully exposed, or somewhere in between. That matters for packaging, warehouse selection, and environmental qualification.

The standard also notes that the class names in parentheses may be selected for special applications. Clause 4 ties each class to combinations of IEC environmental parameter classes from IEC 60721-3-1.

Environmental conditions in Clause 5

Clause 5 groups the storage environment into five kinds of conditions:

  • climatic conditions
  • biological conditions
  • chemically active substances
  • mechanically active substances
  • mechanical conditions

This is useful because a storage site is not judged only by temperature. Humidity, contamination, dust, biological growth, vibration, shock, and static load all matter for whether equipment will remain usable after storage.

Table 1 covers the climatic conditions for classes 1.1 to 1.3E. It includes air temperature, humidity, rain, solar radiation, heat radiation, air movement, condensation, precipitation, water from other sources, and icing or frosting. In practice, this is the core checklist for deciding whether a site can be treated as sheltered indoor storage or exposed storage.

Tables 2 to 5 then classify the non-climatic stresses. Table 2 separates biological exposure such as mould, fungus, rodents, and other animals. Table 3 covers gases and salts, Table 4 covers sand and dust, and Table 5 covers vibration, shock, and static load. Together, these tables describe the full storage environment that designers and logistics teams need to consider.

What terms does SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 define?

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 defines a small set of terms that anchor the class descriptions.

  • Absolute humidity - the mass of water vapour in one cubic metre of dry air.
  • Non-weatherprotected location - a location not protected from direct weather influences.
  • Relative humidity - the ratio of water vapour pressure in moist air to the saturation pressure at the same temperature.
  • Storage - a site where equipment is kept for long periods and is not intended for use during those periods.
  • Weatherprotected location - a location protected from weather influences.
  • Totally weatherprotected location - a location where direct weather influences are completely excluded.
  • Partly weatherprotected location - a location where direct weather influences are not completely excluded.

Who uses SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006?

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 is used by telecommunications equipment designers, packaging engineers, test laboratories, quality managers, and procurement teams. They use it to specify storage environments, select the right environmental class for a site, and check whether storage conditions are aligned with the equipment’s expected exposure.

It is also relevant for operators and integrators who store equipment before installation or deployment. The class descriptions help them decide whether a room, warehouse, or open-air location is suitable.

What changed in SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 from the previous edition?

The document history shows an earlier publication as ETS 300 019-1-1 in 1992, a V2.1.0 publication in December 2001, and the V2.1.2 publication in April 2002. This is the later version identified by the standard reference.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006?

SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 refers to these documents:

  • IEC 60721-3-1 - provides the base classification of environmental parameters and severities for storage
  • IEC 60068-2-27 - provides shock test guidance and the Model Shock Response Spectra reference used in Clause 5
  • IEC 60721-2-4 - provides background on solar radiation and temperature, used in the note on atmospheric radiation
  • ETSI EN 300 019 Part 1-2 - covers temporary storage during transport
  • ETSI EN 300 019 Part 1-0 - gives the general overview of Part 1
  • ETSI EN 300 019 Part 2 - specifies recommended test severities and test methods for the environmental classes

What does the SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.1.2:2006 document contain?

The document contains the scope, references, definitions, the class descriptions in Clause 4, and the environmental condition tables in Clause 5. It also includes climatograms for the main storage classes, which show the temperature and humidity ranges associated with each class.

The tables are structured so a reader can compare a storage site with the class definitions and then decide what level of environmental exposure to expect. Annex A is an informative bibliography.
