Water quality - Determination of cadmium by atomic absorption spectrometry (ISO 5961:1994)
Specifies two methods for the determination of cadmium: using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in an air-acetylene flame (aspiration of the acidified sample into the flame and measurement of the cadmium concentration at a wavelength of 228,8 nm) and by electrothermal atomization AAS (injection of the acidified sample into an electrically heated graphite tube of an electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometer and measurement of the absorbance at a wavelength of 228,8 nm).

Overview
SIST EN ISO 5961:1996 - Water quality - Determination of cadmium by atomic absorption spectrometry is an international standard published by CEN, which specifies reliable laboratory methods for measuring cadmium concentrations in water. Based on ISO 5961:1994, this standard ensures accurate detection and monitoring of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The procedures described are essential for water quality assessment and environmental protection, catering to regulatory, industrial, and research applications.
Key Topics
- Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS): The document covers methods using AAS, a sensitive analytical technique for quantifying trace metals.
- Flame AAS Method: Involves aspiration of acidified water samples into an air-acetylene flame, with measurement of cadmium at the 228.8 nm wavelength.
- Electrothermal Atomization AAS: Utilizes an electrically heated graphite tube to atomize the sample, enhancing sensitivity for detecting lower concentrations of cadmium.
- Sample Preparation: Guidance on acidification and handling of samples to minimize contamination and ensure accurate results.
- Precision and Calibration: Outlines quality control, calibration procedures, and considerations for reliable and reproducible cadmium determination.
Applications
The methods specified in SIST EN ISO 5961:1996 are widely used for:
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists authorities and laboratories in meeting water quality regulations and environmental standards by monitoring cadmium levels in surface, ground, and drinking water.
- Industrial Wastewater Monitoring: Supports industries in analyzing their effluent discharges to prevent environmental contamination and health risks associated with cadmium.
- Environmental Assessment: Provides reliable data for environmental studies, risk assessments, and pollution control programs focused on trace heavy metals in the water cycle.
- Research Laboratories: Enables scientific institutions and research groups to measure cadmium as part of broader environmental or toxicological studies.

Practical Value
Implementing SIST EN ISO 5961:1996 supports laboratories, industries, and regulatory bodies in achieving:
- Accurate Cadmium Quantification: Ensures trust in reported cadmium concentrations in compliance monitoring and research.
- Standardized Procedures: Promotes consistency across labs and jurisdictions for cadmium determination using recognized AAS techniques.
- Enhanced Water Safety: Plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and the environment by controlling exposure to potentially hazardous cadmium contamination.
By following the protocols in SIST EN ISO 5961:1996, stakeholders benefit from established best practices for water quality monitoring and trace cadmium determination, contributing to effective water resource management and environmental protection.
