Water quality - Determination of cadmium by atomic absorption spectrometry (ISO 5961:1994)

Specifies two methods for the determination of cadmium: using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in an air-acetylene flame (aspiration of the acidified sample into the flame and measurement of the cadmium concentration at a wavelength of 228,8 nm) and by electrothermal atomization AAS (injection of the acidified sample into an electrically heated graphite tube of an electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometer and measurement of the absorbance at a wavelength of 228,8 nm).

Overview

EN ISO 5961:1995 is a crucial standard developed by CEN for assessing water quality through the precise determination of cadmium content. Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal with significant environmental and health risks, making its accurate measurement in water essential for safety and regulatory compliance. This standard outlines two validated atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) methods to quantify cadmium concentration, ensuring reliable and reproducible results for laboratories and environmental monitoring bodies.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
EN ISO 5961 specifies two distinct atomic absorption spectrometry techniques for cadmium measurement in water samples, focusing on accuracy and sensitivity.

  • Method 1: Flame AAS

    • Utilizes an air-acetylene flame to atomize the acidified water sample.
    • The cadmium concentration is measured at a wavelength of 228.8 nm.
    • Involves aspirating the acidified sample directly into the flame for atomic absorption analysis.
  • Method 2: Electrothermal Atomization AAS

    • Employs a graphite furnace for electrically heating the atomizer.
    • Involves injection of the acidified sample into the graphite tube for atomization.
    • Measurement is performed at the same cadmium-specific wavelength of 228.8 nm.
    • This method provides higher sensitivity compared to flame AAS, ideal for lower cadmium concentrations.
  • Analytical Precision
Both methods emphasize stringent sample preparation, calibration, and measurement protocols to achieve accurate cadmium quantification.

  • Wavelength Specificity
The standardized wavelength of 228.8 nm is critical for detecting cadmium in the presence of interfering substances.

Applications

  • Environmental Monitoring
Monitoring cadmium levels in surface water, groundwater, and treated wastewater to assess pollution and compliance with environmental directives.

  • Water Quality Assessment
Used by municipalities and water treatment facilities to ensure potable water meets safety standards with respect to cadmium contamination.

  • Industrial Effluent Testing
Evaluation of waste discharges from industries such as mining, metal plating, and manufacturing to control cadmium pollution.

  • Research and Laboratory Analysis
Enables environmental laboratories and researchers to quantify cadmium accurately for studies related to toxicology, ecology, and water chemistry.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Supports adherence to national and international water quality regulations by providing standardized test methods recognized across Europe and globally.

Related Standards

  • ISO 8288 – General guidance on water quality sampling and preservation techniques, complementing sample handling prior to cadmium analysis.

  • EN ISO 11466 – Soil quality determination of trace elements including cadmium via digestion methods, which may precede water extraction analysis.

  • ISO 11885 – Water quality-determination of selected elements by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), an alternative technique for metal analysis.

  • EN ISO 15586 – Water quality determination of mercury content, relevant due to similar heavy metal monitoring requirements.
