Overview

EN 934-3:2009+A1:2012 is the CEN European Standard that defines requirements, conformity criteria, and marking and labelling rules for admixtures for masonry mortar. It applies to admixtures used in cement‑based masonry mortars - specifically two types: air‑entraining/plasticising admixtures and long‑term retarding admixtures for masonry mortar. The standard covers ready‑mixed and site‑made mortars and links to CE‑marking provisions and factory production control.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Definitions and scope - clarifies terms such as air entraining/plasticizing and long‑term set retarding admixtures and specifies performance and compliance dosage concepts.
  • Performance requirements - additional, type‑specific requirements are given in tables:
    • Air‑entraining/plasticising admixtures - target total air content A1 = (17 ± 3) % by volume; air content stability after 1 h and extended mixing; water reduction ≥ 8% for standard consistence; compressive strength at 28 days ≥ 70% of control.
    • Long‑term retarding admixtures (ready to use mortar) - target air content A2 = (17 ± 3) %; consistence after 28 h within 15 mm of initial value; air content after 28 h ≥ 0.70 A2; resistance to penetration after 72 h ≥ 1.0 N/mm²; compressive strength at 28 days ≥ 70% of control.
  • Test methods and sampling - references EN 480 series (notably EN 480‑13) and EN 1015 methods for consistency, air content, workable life/penetration resistance and compressive strength. Sampling and conformity control follow EN 934‑6.
  • Conformity control - factory production control test frequencies and initial type testing requirements are specified to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Marking and labelling - mandatory information includes admixture designation (type, EN number, table code such as “EN 934‑3; T.3”), batch number, storage instructions and expiry, safety guidance, and manufacturer’s recommended dosage. Annex ZA addresses CE‑marking and related regulatory clauses.
  • Dangerous substances - guidance on content and release of hazardous substances (informative Annex A).

Applications

  • Ensures reliable performance of admixtures used in masonry mortar for open‑laying, blockwork and pointed restoration where controlled air content, workability and retardation are required.
  • Used to verify products supplied to construction projects, support CE‑marking and meet project specification and regulatory compliance.

Who uses this standard

  • Admixture manufacturers and formulators
  • Construction product certifiers and testing laboratories
  • Quality managers, specifiers and contractors working with masonry mortar
  • Regulatory authorities and conformity assessment bodies
