Overview

EN 124-4:2015 specifies requirements for precast gully tops and manhole tops made of steel reinforced concrete intended for installation in pedestrian and vehicular areas. It covers products with a clear opening up to and including 1 000 mm and defines material, performance and testing requirements for use across a range of traffic load classes (A 15 to F 900). EN 124-4:2015 is intended to be used in combination with EN 124‑1 and the other material-specific parts of the EN 124 series.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classes: Applicable for areas from pedestrian/pedal cycle zones (minimum A 15) through car parks (B 125), kerbside channels (C 250), carriageways and hard shoulders (D 400), high wheel loads (E 600) to very high wheel loads (F 900).
  • Material & dimensions: Precast elements of steel reinforced concrete, clear opening ≤ 1 000 mm.
  • Concrete performance:
    • Minimum compressive strength generally C35/45, with C25/30 permitted for class A 15.
    • Maximum water/(cement + additions) ratio ≤ 0.50.
    • Exposure class at least XC2; higher exposure classes (XF, XD, XA) apply where freeze/thaw or aggressive chemical exposure is expected.
  • Durability & resistance:
    • Requirements for freeze–thaw with de‑icing salts testing; compliant products may carry a “+R” mark.
    • Clauses address reinforcement cover, crack width control, edge/contact surface protection and reaction-to-fire considerations.
  • Testing & conformity:
    • Type testing, factory production control (FPC) and Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) procedures are specified.
    • Annex ZA links EN 124‑4 to EU Construction Products Regulation (CE marking and labelling).

Applications and who uses this standard

EN 124-4:2015 is used by:

  • Manufacturers of precast concrete covers to design, test and declare product performance.
  • Civil and structural engineers, highway designers and specifiers selecting manhole/gully tops for roads, car parks, docks and airports.
  • Procurement bodies, contractors and asset owners (municipalities, transport authorities, airports, ports) ensuring installed covers meet traffic load and durability requirements.
  • Maintenance teams and inspectors referencing performance, marking and replacement criteria.

Practical uses include specifying combined cover/frame assemblies (note: the declared load class for a combined product is limited by its weakest constituent), ensuring frost/de‑icing salt resilience (+R marking), and complying with CE marking rules for sale within the EU.
