Overview

oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-21:2026 is a Slovenian adoption of the international standard IEC 60704-2-21, developed under the auspices of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and maintained by technical committee SC 59L for small household appliances. This standard specifies a test code for the determination of airborne acoustical noise of household and similar electrical appliances, focusing specifically on coffee preparation appliances. It is intended to ensure uniform procedures for measuring noise emissions, helping manufacturers, testing labs, and regulators obtain reliable and comparable acoustical data.

This standard supplements the general requirements in IEC 60704-1:2021, and outlines special provisions for a diverse range of coffee appliances, including automatic machines, grinders, filter machines, and espresso makers. It excludes coffee appliances meant for professional or commercial settings and coffee vending machines.

Key Topics

  • Noise Measurement Procedures: Defines standardized methodologies for measuring the sound power levels of coffee preparation appliances, accounting for all main functions (grinding, brewing, milk frothing).
  • Pre-Test Preparation: Describes preparation steps, such as preconditioning of coffee beans and equipment operation prior to testing, to promote accuracy and consistency.
  • Measurement Environments: Outlines requirements for acoustical environments, such as special reverberation rooms, to minimize variability.
  • Test Operation: Offers specifications related to filling water tanks, selecting beverage types, adjusting machine settings to default, and measurement cycle for each appliance function.
  • Reporting Requirements: Details the information that must be recorded and reported, including types and quantities of coffee used, measurement times, and functional cycles.

Applications

oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-21:2026 provides significant practical value to several sectors:

  • Manufacturers: By adhering to this standard, coffee appliance makers can reliably measure and declare the noise levels of their products. This supports product development, quality control, and market differentiation for low-noise designs.
  • Testing Laboratories: The standardized test code assists laboratories in conducting repeatable, comparable noise measurements, enabling consistent verification and certification activities.
  • Regulators and Market Surveillance: The standard provides an objective method for verifying manufacturer claims regarding acoustical emissions, supporting consumer protection and regulatory compliance.
  • Retailers and End Users: Reliable noise level information on product labels helps consumers make informed decisions, especially in settings where quiet operation is a priority (e.g., open-plan homes or offices).

Appliances covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Automatic coffee machines
  • Coffee grinders
  • Pad and capsule coffee machines
  • Porta filter and espresso coffee machines
  • Filter coffee machines
  • Coffee percolators (household type)

Related Standards

The following standards are closely associated with oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-21:2026:

  • IEC 60704-1:2021General test code for airborne acoustical noise for household and similar electrical appliances. This is the base standard supplemented by the 2-21 part for coffee appliances.
  • IEC 60704-3Procedure for determining and verifying declared noise emission values.
  • IEC 60661Methods for measuring the performance of electric household coffee makers.
  • ISO 3743-1 and ISO 3743-2Acoustics - Determination of sound power levels; referenced for certain measurement methods and environments.

Conclusion

Adoption of oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-21:2026 helps ensure fair comparison, consumer transparency, and advancement of quieter kitchen appliances, all through standardized noise measurement for coffee preparation devices. By detailing the particular requirements for sound testing in this niche, the standard supports both compliance and innovation throughout the coffee appliance industry.

28 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national
29 electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co -operation on all
30 questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities ,
31 IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS)
32 and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC
33 National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental
34 and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with
35 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between
36 the two organizations.
37 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
38 of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National
39 Committees.
40 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in
41 that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC
42 cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.

44 the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and
45 the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
46 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment
47 services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by
48 independent certification bodies.

54 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is indispensable
55 for the correct application of this publication.
56 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent rights.
57 IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

94 INTRODUCTION
95 The measuring conditions specified in this document provide for sufficient accuracy in determining the
96 noise emitted and comparing the results of measurements taken by different laboratories, whilst
97 simulating as far as possible the practical use of coffee preparation appliances in household kitchens.
98 It is recommended to consider the determination of noise levels as part of a comprehensive testing
99 procedure covering many aspects of the properties and performance of coffee preparation appliances.
100 NOTE As stated in the introduction to IEC 60704-1:2021, this test code is concerned with airborne noise only.
