Overview
EN 60442:1998/A1:2003 (IEC 60442:1998/A1:2003) is the European/CENELEC amendment that defines methods for measuring the performance of electric toasters for household and similar purposes. Approved by CENELEC in March 2003, Amendment A1 updates the original EN 60442:1998 and adds informative guidance on the minimum product information that should be available at the point of sale. The standard is produced under IEC TC 59 / SC 59G (small kitchen appliances) and complements applicable safety requirements.
Key Topics and Requirements
This standard focuses on standardized performance measurement and consumer information for electric toasters. Key items included or introduced by Amendment A1:
- Methods for measuring performance of household electric toasters (title scope).
- Annex B (informative): Minimum information available at the point of sale, which specifies consumer-facing data such as:
- Brand name and model number
- Cord length (m)
- Number of standard slices that can be toasted at one time (reference to Clause 8)
- Maximum thickness of bread product that can be toasted
- Additional features (for example, roll heating device - separate or integrated, removable crumb tray, etc.)
- Cross-reference to safety requirements: this informative annex does not supersede IEC 60335-2-9 (particular safety requirements for grills, toasters and similar appliances).
Note: Amendment A1 leaves the base publication’s test content unchanged until scheduled review; the document itself governs how performance metrics and point-of-sale information are presented, not the product safety design.
Applications and Who Uses This Standard
This performance standard is practical for:
- Manufacturers and product engineers - to develop, verify and document toaster performance and to align product specifications with market expectations.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to apply consistent measurement methods when evaluating toaster performance.
- Retailers and marketing teams - to ensure the minimum point-of-sale information is available and accurate.
- Procurement and regulatory authorities - for specification, comparison and compliance checks of household toasters.
Keywords: electric toaster standard, IEC 60442, EN 60442, toaster performance testing, point-of-sale information, household toasters.
