Overview
EN 60335-2-101:2002/A1:2008 is the CENELEC amendment (A1) to the European adoption of IEC 60335-2-101. It applies to the safety of household and similar electrical appliances - particular requirements for vaporizers. This amendment (approved 2008‑05‑01) updates the original Part 2‑101 standard and clarifies scope, user protection (including children and vulnerable persons), and interaction with general Part 1 requirements. It is part of the IEC 60335 series covering domestic electrical appliance safety.
Key Topics
- Scope and user considerations: clarifies that the standard covers persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience, prevent safe use without supervision or instruction.
- Abnormal situations and electromagnetic effects: explicitly states the standard covers foreseeable abnormal conditions and how electromagnetic phenomena can affect safe operation.
- Relationship with Part 1: confirms that where Part 2 does not add requirements for hazards addressed in Part 1, the general Part 1 requirements apply.
- Product family precedence: this Part 2 product family standard takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards covering the same subject.
- Mechanical strength: editorial renumbering/addition (21.1 Addition) to clarify mechanical strength requirements.
- Hot surface assessment: bibliographic addition of ISO 13732-1 (EN ISO 13732-1:2006) for methods assessing human response to contact with hot surfaces.
- Standard status and implementation dates: indicates national implementation and withdrawal dates for conflicting standards (implementation by 2009‑02‑01; withdrawal by 2013‑05‑01).
Applications
This amendment is relevant to:
- Appliance manufacturers designing and certifying vaporizers (humidifiers, aroma/vapor devices) for the European market.
- Product designers and safety engineers ensuring thermally safe surfaces and mechanical robustness.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies using EN/IEC test criteria and determining when Part 1 requirements apply.
- Regulatory authorities and compliance managers aligning product documentation and national standards adoption. Practical use includes design verification, risk assessment for user groups (children and vulnerable persons), and conformity testing related to electrical safety, hot‑surface contact, and electromagnetic immunity.
Related Standards
- EN/IEC 60335-1 (General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances) - applies where Part 2 is silent.
- ISO 13732-1 / EN ISO 13732-1:2006 - referenced for hot surface assessment methods.
- Other IEC 60335 Part 2 family standards and relevant CENELEC national adoptions.
