General Information
SIST EN 6141:2020 Overview
SIST EN 6141:2020 is a European aerospace standard that defines non-metallic protective plugs for EN 6123 fitting ends. These plugs are critical components used to seal fluid ports on aircraft and aerospace fluid systems during transportation and storage. Their primary purpose is to protect fluid ports from contamination, spillage, damage, and clogging, ensuring the integrity and cleanliness of hydraulic and fluid systems in aerospace applications.
This standard specifies the dimensions, tolerances, materials, sealing characteristics, and quality requirements for these protective plugs. It ensures that the plugs provide reliable protection against moisture, fluids, chemicals, particles, and physical damage. Importantly, due to stringent cleanliness demands in aerospace environments, these plugs are intended for single-use only.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
EN 6141 plugs are designed to seal EN 6123 fitting ends to prevent contamination, spillage, damage, and clogging in fluid ports during storage and transport.Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard details exact plug configurations, dimensions, and linear tolerances based on ISO 2768-m, ensuring compatibility and effective sealing with EN 6123 fittings.Material and Resistance
Plugs are made from high-density polyethylene (HD-PE), featuring specific density and melt flow index requirements to guarantee resistance to phosphate ester-based hydraulic fluids (ISO 9940 compliant).Temperature and Pressure Requirements
Operational storage temperatures range from -54 °C to 85 °C, with installation/removal recommended near room temperature (25 ± 10 °C). Plugs must withstand a proof pressure of 100 kPa without leakage or deformation.Cleanliness Standards
To meet aerospace fluid cleanliness, plugs comply with ISO 11218 Class 7 or better, and packaging maintains cleanliness until opening.Marking and Packaging
Plugs are permanently marked with manufacturer information and standard part designation in accordance with EN 2424, with chlorine-free, impact-resistant packaging to preserve quality during storage and transport.Testing and Quality Assurance
Qualification includes first article inspection and sealing tests under specified conditions. Manufacturers must operate under approved aerospace quality systems (e.g., EN 9100).
Applications
EN 6141 plugs serve critical protection roles in:
- Aerospace fluid and hydraulic systems: Sealing fluid ports during manufacturing, transport, and maintenance to prevent contamination and fluid loss.
- Aircraft assembly and storage: Safeguarding sensitive hydraulic fittings from dirt, moisture, and damage that could compromise system integrity.
- Defense and space equipment: Ensuring contamination-free hydraulic lines where system failure is not an option.
- Aerospace supply chain logistics: Protecting fluid system components during shipping and handling to meet strict aerospace cleanliness and quality requirements.
Adopting EN 6141 plugs enhances maintenance efficiency, reduces risk of hydraulic system failures, and helps aerospace organizations meet industry safety and quality standards.
Related Standards
