This part of this European Standard specifies the requirements for the mass, other properties and testing of non-ferrous metal coatings on steel wire and steel wire products of circular or other cross-section.
This European Standard deals with requirements of general application and is of use for those coatings for which no particular requirements have been laid down in the following parts (2 to 6). Deviations are possible, particularly if required for well-defined products. In such cases, appropriate requirements shall be part of the relevant product standard.

Querschnitt fest.
Die vorliegende Europäische Norm behandelt Anforderungen für die allgemeine Anwendung und gilt für
diejenigen Überzüge, für die keine besonderen Anforderungen in EN 10244-2 bis EN 10244-6 festgelegt sind.
Abweichungen sind möglich, insbesondere wenn sie für bestimmte Produkte verlangt werden. In diesen
Fällen sollten die entsprechenden Anforderungen Bestandteil der jeweiligen Produktnorm sein.

Cette partie de la présente Norme européenne spécifie les exigences en matière de masse, autres
caractéristiques et essais de revêtements métalliques non ferreux sur fils et produits tréfilés en acier de
section circulaire ou autre.
La présente Norme européenne traite des exigences d'application générale et concerne les revêtements pour
lesquels aucune exigence particulière n'a été établie dans les autres parties (2 à 6). Des dérogations sont
possibles, en particulier si elles sont nécessaires pour obtenir des produits spécifiques. Dans ce cas, des
exigences appropriées doivent être données dans la norme de produit correspondante.

EN 10244-1:2009 defines the general principles for non‑ferrous metallic coatings on steel wire and wire products (circular or other cross‑section). Published by CEN, this part specifies how to state coating type/grade, measure coating mass, assess appearance and adherence, and perform routine tests. It applies where no specific requirements are given in Parts 2–6 and is used together with product‑specific standards when deviations are needed.

• Adherence: Assessed by a wrapping test (wire ≤ 7.5 mm) or by a bending test (wire > 7.5 mm). Wrapping: at least six tight turns around a mandrel; mandrel diameter relationship: <4 mm wire → 4× wire diameter; ≥4 mm wire → 5× wire diameter. Coating must not crack or allow slivers to be removed by simple rubbing.
• Test methods and sampling:
  • Gravimetric method is the reference for coating mass: dissolve coating chemically, weigh before/after, calculate g/m2.
  • Other validated methods may be used for convenience, but gravimetric is the reference in disputes.
  • Sampling, sample length and avoidance of damaged areas are defined; retesting follows EN 10021 procedures.
