Overview

EN IEC 61169-1-5:2022 (Radio frequency connectors - Part 1-5: Electrical test methods - Rise time degradation) is a harmonized European adoption of IEC 61169-1-5:2022. It defines standardized electrical test methods to quantify rise time degradation introduced by RF connectors (including triaxial and other RF connector types). The standard explains test principles, required measurement systems, sample preparation (insertion and reference methods), test procedures, data calculation and reporting.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Applies to triaxial and other RF connectors; complements the generic IEC 61169-1 requirements.
  • Test principle: Measures increase in pulse rise time caused by the connector’s distributed inductance and capacitance. Rise time is normally measured from 20% to 80% levels.
  • Calculation: Rise time degradation t is derived from measured rise time with the sample (t3) and the measurement system rise time (t2) using: t = sqrt(t3^2 − t2^2)
  • Measurement system requirements:
    • Measurement-system rise time must be as short as practical and, unless otherwise specified, ≤ 70% of the measured rise time with the sample.
    • The specimen environment impedance (transmission lines, terminations, fixtures) must match test equipment impedance; use an impedance converter if needed.
    • Recommended equipment includes TDR (time domain reflectometer), fast signal generator and oscilloscope with adequate rise-time performance.
  • Test methods: Describes the insertion method (placing connector in a cable transmission path) and the reference method (comparison with a reference transmission path). Both single-ended and differential measurements are covered.
  • Reporting and failure criteria: Specifies what must appear in the test report and how to document results and pass/fail criteria in the relevant product specification.

Applications

  • Characterizing how RF connectors affect high-speed pulse edges and signal integrity in RF, microwave and high-frequency digital systems.
  • Product qualification and acceptance testing of RF and triaxial connectors used in instrumentation, telecom, radar, satellite and high-speed data links.
  • Test laboratories, connector manufacturers, design engineers and quality/compliance teams who need reproducible, standardized measurements of connector-induced rise time degradation.

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 61169-1 - Radio frequency connectors - Part 1: Generic specification - general requirements and measuring methods (referenced normative document).

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
