Stone shields for off-road motorcycling suited to protect riders against stones and debris - Requirements and test methods

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for the stone shields to be worn by youths and adults of either sex while riding motorcycles in motocross and other off-road activities on dirt roads.
Hence this European Standard contains general and performance requirements for the materials utilised and requirements for sizes, shapes, marking and assembly methodology.
This European Standard is not applicable to stone shield for children and for people with chest girth below 75 cm.

Diese Norm legt Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren für die Steinschlag-Protektoren fest, die von Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen beiderlei Geschlechts beim Motorradfahren auf nicht öffentlichen Straßen getragen werden sollen.
Deshalb enthält diese Norm allgemeine Anforderungen und Leistungsanforderungen für die verwendeten Materialien und Anforderungen an Größen, Gestaltung, Kennzeichnung und das Verfahren des Zusammenbaus.
Diese Europäische Norm gilt nicht für Steinschlag-Protektoren für Kinder und für Personen mit einem Brustumfang unter 75 cm.

La présente Norme européenne spécifie les exigences et les méthodes d'essai relatives aux pare-pierres que les jeunes et les adultes des deux sexes doivent porter lorsqu'ils pratiquent le motocyclisme tout-terrain.
La présente Norme européenne contient donc des exigences générales et des exigences de performance portant sur les matériaux utilisés ainsi que des exigences relatives aux tailles, formes, marquage et méthode d'assemblage.
La présente Norme européenne ne s'applique pas pour les pare-pierres à destination des enfants et des personnes dont le tour de poitrine est inférieur à 75 cm.

EN 14021:2003 (CEN) is the European standard that defines requirements and test methods for stone shields for off‑road motorcycling, intended to protect youths and adults against lofted stones and debris encountered in motocross and other dirt‑track activities. It covers construction, sizing, materials, marking, assembly and performance tests for breast guards and optional shoulder, biceps and back guards. The standard excludes children and persons with chest girth below 75 cm.

  • Rigid attachments, straps and fasteners must withstand a pulling force of 120 N.

  • Impactor: hemispherical impactor with 12.5 mm radius, total mass (1000 ± 10) g, delivering (10 ± 1) J.
  • Peak force measured below the anvil must average below 27 kN; shells must not crack or shatter.
  • Test setup: polished steel anvil, piezoelectric force transducer (range ≥50 kN, threshold <0.5 kN), digital sampling ≥10 kHz, frequency response matching ISO 6487 (CFC 1000).
  • Additional tests: surface continuity probe (steel, 500 ± 10 g), tensile testing of closures, ergonomic fit checks.
