Overview

SIST EN 60454-3-2:2006 is a European standard published by CLC that specifies the requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive polyester film tapes used in electrical applications. This standard focuses on polyester film tapes with three types of adhesives: rubber thermosetting, rubber thermoplastic, and acrylic crosslinked adhesives. It consolidates and supersedes previous related standards with updated technical specifications to ensure product quality, safety, and performance consistency in electrical insulation and related uses.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
Defines performance requirements for polyester film adhesive tapes used in electrical insulation, covering physical, electrical, and thermal properties.

  • Classification of Tape Types
Based on film thickness (nominally 23 µm or 50 µm) and adhesive composition:

    • Type 1 & 4: Rubber thermosetting adhesives
    • Type 2 & 5: Acrylic crosslinked adhesives
    • Type 3 & 6: Flame retardant acrylic crosslinked adhesives
    • Type 7 & 8: Rubber thermoplastic adhesives
Each type is identified with specific designation codes for ordering and reference.
  • Performance Requirements
    Includes key parameters such as:

    • Thickness tolerance and dimensional stability
    • Tensile strength and elongation at break
    • Adhesion strength to steel substrates
    • Electrical breakdown voltage both at room temperature and after humid conditioning
    • Thermal endurance with a temperature index of at least 130°C, tested at elevated temperatures up to 180°C
    • Flame retardancy criteria for relevant types
    • Resistance to electrolytic corrosion and durability (flagging test)
  • Test Methods
All tests comply with methods defined in IEC 60454-2, ensuring uniformity and reliability of results. These cover mechanical, electrical, and environmental stress tests.

  • Marking and Packaging
The standard mandates clear labeling and packaging according to IEC 60454-1 guidelines to facilitate traceability and correct usage.

Applications

SIST EN 60454-3-2:2006 is critical for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of electrical insulating tapes that require:

  • Reliable insulation in electrical machines, transformers, capacitors, and switchgear
  • Protection against electrical breakdown and corrosion in high-voltage and humid environments
  • High-temperature resistance in electrical equipment operating at elevated temperatures
  • Enhanced flame retardancy for improved safety in electrical installations
  • Consistent quality assurance for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes used in industrial and commercial electrical applications

This standard supports industries including electrical engineering, manufacturing of electrical apparatus, and maintenance services needing certified adhesive tapes that meet international quality benchmarks.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60454-1: General requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes used in electrical applications
  • IEC 60454-2: Test methods for electrical adhesive tapes, detailing mechanical and electrical performance testing
  • IEC 60674-3-2: Specifications for polyester films used in electrical insulation (plastic films for electrical purposes)
  • IEC 60426: Test methods for determining electrolytic corrosion with insulating materials

Understanding these related standards complements compliance with EN 60454-3-2 and ensures comprehensive assessment and selection of electrical insulating tapes.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
