Transportable gas cylinders - Cylinder bundles - Design, manufacture, identification and testing
This European Standard specifies the requirements for the design, manufacture, identification and testing of a cylinder bundle. It is applicable to cylinder bundles containing compressed gas, liquefied gas and mixtures thereof. It is also applicable to cylinder bundles for acetylene.
This European Standard does not apply to packages in which cylinders are manifolded together in a support frame which is designed to be fixed permanently to a road vehicle to a railway wagon or to the ground as a customer storage vessel. It does not apply to cylinder bundles which are designed for use in extreme environmental or operational conditions when additional and extraordinary requirements are imposed to maintain safety standards, reliability and performance. Offshore cylinder bundles are a specific example.
NOTE The specific requirements for acetylene are included in annex B.
This standard is primarily for industrial gases other than Liquefied Petroleum gases (LPG) but may also be used for LPG. However for dedicated LPG cylinders, see standards prepared by CEN/TC 286 Liquefied petroleum gas equipment and accessories.

Diese Europäische Norm legt Anforderungen an Konstruktion, Herstellung, Kennzeichnung und Prüfung von Flaschenbündeln fest. Sie gilt für Flaschenbündel für verdichtete oder verflüssigte Gase sowie deren Gemische. Sie gilt auch für Acetylen-Bündel.
Diese Norm gilt nicht für Bündel, bei denen die Gasflaschen über Sammelleitungen miteinander verbunden und an einem Gestell befestigt sind, das für die dauerhafte Befestigung an einem Straßenfahrzeug (Batterie-Fahrzeug), einem Eisenbahnwagen (Batterie-Wagen) oder auf der Erde als Lagerbehälter des Kunden ausgelegt ist. Diese Norm gilt nicht für Flaschenbündel, die für den Einsatz unter extremen Umweltbedingungen oder Betriebsbedingungen eingesetzt werden, wo zusätzliche oder außergewöhnliche Anforderungen gelten, um Sicherheitsnormen, Zuverlässigkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit aufrechtzuerhalten. Ein spezifisches Beispiel hierfür ist ein Flaschenbündel für den Offshore-Betrieb .
ANMERKUNG Die spezifischen Anforderungen für Acetylen werden in Anhang B aufgeführt.
Diese Norm gilt in erster Linie für andere Industriegase als Flüssiggas (LPG), sie kann aber auch für Flüssiggas angewendet werden. Für besondere Flaschen für Flüssiggas(LPG) siehe jedoch die vom CEN/TC 286 "Flüssiggas-Geräte und Ausrüstungsteile" erarbeiteten Normen.

La présente Norme européenne spécifie les exigences relatives a la conception, a la fabrication, a l'identification et aux essais d'un cadre de bouteilles. Elle s'applique aux cadres de bouteilles contenant du gaz comprimé, du gaz liquéfié et des mélanges de ces gaz. La présente norme s'applique également aux cadres de bouteilles pour acétylene.
La présente Norme européenne ne s'applique pas aux emballages dans lesquels les bouteilles sont reliées par une rampe dans une armature de support conçue pour etre fixée de maniere permanente sur un véhicule routier, sur un wagon ferroviaire ou sur le sol pour servir de récipient de stockage chez le client. La présente norme ne s'applique pas aux cadres de bouteilles conçus pour etre utilisés dans des conditions de fonctionnement et d'environnement extremes, lorsque des exigences supplémentaires et extraordinaires sont imposées afin de garantir le respect des normes de sécurité, la fiabilité et les performances. Les cadres de bouteilles au large (offshore) constituent un exemple spécifique.

EN 13769:2003 (E)4IntroductionFor some applications, the contents of an individual gas cylinder may not satisfy the gas demand, in which caseassemblies of cylinders may be used to supply larger volumes of gas in a single unit. The single unit, whichcontains a number of cylinders, is known as a cylinder bundle.A cylinder bundle is a portable assembly which is designed for being routinely lifted and which consists of a frameand two or more cylinders connected to a manifold by cylinder valves or fittings such that the cylinders are filled,transported and emptied without disassembly.A cylinder bundle can be subjected to rough handling in the course of normal operations.There are types of gas cylinder assemblies which use cylinder bundle components, but which are designed to bedisassembled at each filling to enable the cylinders to be filled individually.
These assemblies do not conform tothe basic definition of a cylinder bundle, however, they are commonly referred to as bundles. Their specialrequirements are included in annex A.Acetylene cylinder bundles are often filled without disassembly, however, in order to confirm their solvent contentthey are disassembled after a defined number of fillings.Unless otherwise stated, individual cylinders within cylinder bundles should conform to applicable standards forsingle cylinders. not exceeding 5 000 ml/m³4 Design4.1 GeneralThe design of the bundle shall take into consideration its construction and inspection as well as its operation. Allpressurized components shall be designed to operate safely in the temperature range of – 20 °C to + 65 °C. Theyshould also be designed to withstand local temperature conditions outside this range.Bundles which are filled by weight shall not feature component parts which are de-mountable without the use oftools, with the exception of the main valve outlet protection cap.4.2 Frame4.2.1The frame shall retain securely all the components of the bundle and shall protect them from damagewhich might cause leaks. Such damage can be caused by vibration, impact loads or handling loads which can beexperienced in normal operation. The method of cylinder restraint shall prevent any vertical or horizontal movementor rotation of the cylinder which would impose undue strain on the manifold (see 7.2.2). The total assembly shall becapable of withstanding rough handling, including being dropped or toppled.Additionally no leakage of gas shall be caused during the lifting of the bundle (see 4.2.2).SIST EN 13769:2004
EN 13769:2003 (E)84.2.2The frame shall include features designed for the handling and transportation of the bundle. Bundles canbe lifted typically by fork-lift, lift-jack trolley or overhead crane.The lifting eyes shall be designed to withstand a design load of 2 x maximum gross weight.
Bundles with morethan one lifting eye shall be designed such that a minimum sling leg angle of 45° to the horizontal can be achievedduring lifting using the lifting eyes.Where four lifting eyes are used their design shall be such that they are strong enough to allow the bundle to belifted by only two.Where two or four lifting eyes are used, diametrically opposite lifting eyes shall be aligned with each other to allowfor correct lifting using shackle pins.Where a bundle is moved by fork-lift truck it shall feature two fork apertures on each side it is to be lifted from. Thefork apertures shall be positioned symmetrically about the centre of gravity and their size shall be appropriate to theforks which are to be used to move the bundle. The fork apertures shall be designed such that the bundle cannotaccidentally disengage from the forks.4.2.3Frame structural members shall be designed for a vertical load of 2 x the maximum gross weight of thebundle. Design stress levels shall not exceed 0,9 x the yield strength of the material.4.2.4The frame design shall ensure that there are no protrusions from the exterior frame structure which couldcause hazards.4.2.5There shall be no features in which water and debris can collect to increase the tare weight of bundles filledby weight.4.2.6The floor of the bundle frame shall not buckle during normal operational conditions and shall facilitate thedrainage of water and debris from around the base of the cylinders.4.2.7The design shall ensure stability under normal operating conditions.4.2.8If the frame design includes any movable doors or covers then these shall be capable of being secured inposition with latches, which shall not be capable of being dislodged by operational impact loads.4.2.9Access shall be maintained to all valves which need to be operated in normal service or in an emergency.4.2.10Each frame shall include a unique identification number which shall be permanently marked.4.3 CylindersCylinders within a bundle shall be suitable for the gas type. They shall all have the same test pressure and shallconform to the appropriate standards covering individual cylinders.4.4 Cylinder valves/cylinder fittings4.4.1Either a cylinder valve or a cylinder fitting shall be fitted into the necks of cylinders within the bundle, thechoice of item being determined by the gas product within the bundle and operational requirements.For acetylene see annex B.4.4.2Cylinder valves and cylinder fittings shall be compatible with the gas and pressure for which the bundle isintended.4.4.3Cylinder valves and cylinder fittings shall be compatible with the neck of the cylinder.4.4.4A cylinder valve shall be used where the bundle contains toxic gas or gas mixture with an LC50
of less than200 ppm (ml/m3), pyrophoric gas, or flammable mixtures with more than 1% of pyrophoric components. A cylindervalve shall not be used for non toxic liquefied gases, unless the valve is permanently locked open.SIST EN 13769:2004
EN 13769:2003 (E)94.4.5If the gas is a toxic liquefied gas, then to ensure that individual cylinders are not overfilled, the individualcylinders shall be removed from the frame for filling in accordance with annex A.4.4.6When cylinder valves are fitted, their outlet connections shall be of a form appropriate to the product withinthe bundle, or of a form which cannot lead to the incorrect connection to equipment designed for other products.4.5 Manifold4.5.1The manifold shall be compatible with the gas and the pressure for which the bundle is intended.For acetylene see annex B.4.5.2The manifold shall be designed to be capable of withstanding, as a minimum, the design pressurerequirements of the cylinders.4.5.3For compressed gases the design pressure shall be not less then 1,5 x working pressure. For liquefiedgases the design pressure shall be not less than test pressure of the cylinder. The maximum stress of themanifolding arrangement at the test pressure shall not exceed 75% of the guaranteed yield strength of the material.4.5.4The proof test pressure shall be a minimum of 1,0 x design pressure.4.5.5No part of the manifold shall bear against other components in the bundle except at cylinder valve/fittinginterfaces or at defined attachment points to the frame.4.5.6Where the manifold is made of metal, the necessary flexibility shall be achieved by the use of bends orcoils.
Flexible hoses or non-metallic pipework should only be used as part of the fixed pipework on the bundle aftertrials have proved their acceptability, and the length of such hoses and pipework shall be kept to a minimum.4.6 Main connection(s)The main connection(s) shall be compatible with the gas and the pressure for which the bundle is intended andshall be protected by the frame; i.e. the valve shall not protrude.5 ManufacturingA bundle shall be manufactured in accordance with the design criteria listed in clause 4.For this condition to be satisfied the manufacturer shall:¾ use welding procedures in accordance with EN 288-1;¾ use approved welders in accordance with EN 287-1;¾ use brazing procedures in accordance with EN 13134;¾ use approved brazers in accordance with EN 13133.6 Identification6.1 GeneralA bundle design can include components which protect the manifold and which can cause an obstruction to theview of the shoulders of the cylinders. Therefore the requirements for labelling and colour coding as defined inEN 1089-2 and EN 1089-3 do not apply to bundles, except for acetylene see annex B.Additionally, markings on the individual cylinders can also be obscured, therefore certain information whichrequires to be checked at the time of filling shall be duplicated on the outside of the bundle, see 6.3. EN 13769:2003 (E)10filled by weight with products other than acetylene it is not required to mark the tare weight on cylinders accordingto ISO 13769.6.2 Product and hazard identification6.2.1 Precautionary labelsIndividual cylinders in bundles are not required to have labels attached. The appropriate precautionary labels andother information in accordance with EN 1089-2 shall be attached to the bundle adjacent to the main connection.The minimum size of the side of the precautionary label shall be 100 mm and shall be in accordance with thetransport regulations.6.2.2 Colour codingThe use of the cylinder colours defined in EN 1089-3 is not mandatory for cylinders assembled into a bundle or forthe bundle frame itself, except for acetylene see annex B.6.3 Bundle filling identification6.3.1 GeneralIn addition to the information on individual cylinders in accordance with ISO 13769, the information specified in6.3.2 to 6.3.4 shall be clearly identified on a corrosion resistant plate permanently fixed on the outside of thebundle:6.3.2 Certification marks—Reference to this standard;—The design reference number, approval number, (if appropriate);—The character(s) identifying the country of approval as indicated by the distinguishing signs of motor vehiclesin international traffic;—The identity mark or stamp of the inspection body that is registered with the competent authority of the countryauthorising the marking;—The date of the initial inspection, the year (four digits) followed by the month (two digits) separated by a slash(i.e. "/" ).6.3.3 Operational marks—The test pressure in bar, preceded by the letters "PH" and followed by the letters "BAR";—For bundles filled by weight, the tare weight and the maximum permissible filling weight;—For compresses gases which are filled under pressure and for UN No. 1001 acetylene, dissolved, andUN No. 3374 acetylene, solvent free, the working pressure in bar, preceded by the letters "PW";—In the case of liquefied gases, the water capacity in litres expressed to three significant digits rounded down tothe last digit, followed by the letter "L";—In the case of UN No. 1001 acetylene, dissolved and UN No. 3374 acetylene, solvent free, the tare weights inaccordance with B.4.3 expressed to two significant figures rounded down to the last digit followed by the letters"KG".SIST EN 13769:2004
EN 13769:2003 (E)116.3.4 Manufacturing marks—The manufacturer's mark registered by the competent authority. When the country of manufacture is not thesame as the country of approval, then the manufacturer's mark shall be preceded by the character(s) identifying thecountry of manufacture as indicated by the distinguishing signs of motor vehicles in international traffic. The countrymark and the manufacturer's mark shall be separated by a space or slash;—The serial number assigned by the manufacturer;6.3.5 GroupingThe above marks shall be placed in three groups.—Manufacturing marks shall be the top grouping and shall appear consecutively in the sequence given in 6.3.4.—The middle grouping shall include the test pressure, which shall be immediately preceded by the workingpressure when the latter is required.—Certification marks shall be the bottom grouping and shall appear in the sequence given in 6.3.2.The minimum size of the marks shall be 5 mm.For additional data for acetylene, see annex B.6.4 Other informationThe following information shall be clearly identified on the outside of the bundle:¾ the name or identification of the owner;¾ the home station of the bundle;¾ the gross weight of the bundle in kg which shall be visible from all directions from which lifting can beperformed.
The minimum height of the lettering shall be 30 mm;¾ other critical operating instructions, e.g. closure of individual cylinder valves in transit when this is required;7 Testing7.1 GeneralBundle testing shall be considered in two distinct phases:¾ prototype testing of the frame, the manifold and the fully assembled bundle;¾ initial inspection/production testing of the frame, the manifold and the fully assembled bundle;The additional and specific requirements for acetylene are included in annex B.7.2 Prototype testing of the frame, the manifold and the fully assembled bundle7.2.1 ChecksDesign calculations, drawings and specifications of the frame and the manifold shall be checked by a competentbody. EN 13769:2003 (E)127.2.2 Tests7.2.2.1 FrameA prototype frame shall be constructed and this shall be checked for conformance to 7.2.1. If the frame includessling lifting eyes it shall be proof load tested to 2 x the maximum gross weight of the bundle. All primary structuraljoints shall be subjected to crack detection in accordance with EN 1290 and EN 1291.7.2.2.2 ManifoldA prototype manifold shall be constructed to drawings and specifications, and checked for conformance to 4.5. Themanifold shall be subjected to a pressure test programme which shall consist of:¾ Hydraulic proof test with a pressure as specified in 4.5.3;¾ Pneumatic leak test at the maximum permissible operating pressure using dry oil-free air or nitrogen, exceptfor manifolds intended for hydrogen or helium service which shall be leak tested using helium test gas.The hydraulic proof test may be replaced by a pneumatic test where facilities are available.7.2.2.3 Bundle7.2.2.3.1A fully assembled bundle shall be checked for ease of access to valves, free routing of manifold andoperation of doors and covers where applicable.7.2.2.3.2The manifold to cylinder valve/cylinder fitting interface and the manifold to outlet valve/outlet blockinterface shall be leak tested with the bundle at the maximum permissible operating pressure (see 4.4 to 4.6).7.2.2.3.3The identification markings/plates/labels/tags shall be checked for conformance to clause 6.7.2.2.3.4The stability of the bundle shall be demonstrated by calculation or physical test.7.2.2.3.5Two types of drop tests, as follows, shall be performed, both onto a concrete surface. One bundle maybe used for both tests. The bundle shall contain a nominal pressure of 5 bar minimum inert gas and the cylindersshall be ballasted (e.g. with water) to represent gross weight. The bundle shall be in the condition as duringtransport e.g. cylinder valves either open or closed.Vertical drop: The bundle shall be dropped vertically down onto a corner of the frame from a height of 0,1 m. Theangle between the frame base members and the ground shall be a minimum of 5°, which represents normal roughoperation. The pass criteria are:¾ The primary frame structure shall not fail such that subsequent movement by fork-lift truck or slinging is notpossible;¾ The cylinders and manifolds shall remain constrained in the frame, though deformation of components isacceptable;¾ The bundle shall not leak (no continuous leak from any cylinder of the bundle).Rotating drop: The bundle shall be dropped from a height of 1,2 m in a rotating manner such that the top hits theground first, which represents an exceptional situation. The pass criteria are:¾ The primary frame structure shall not fail such that subsequent movement by fork-lift truck or slinging is notpossible;¾ The cylinders and manifolds shall remain constrained in the frame, though deformation of components andslight separation of the cylinders are acceptable;¾ The bundle shall not leak (no continuous leak from any cylinder of the bundle).SIST EN 13769:2004
EN 13769:2003 (E)137.3 Initial inspection/Production testing of the frame, the manifold and the fully assembled bundle7.3.1 FrameThe frame shall be proof load tested to 2 x gross weight on 10 % of a batch. If a defect is detected, then the wholeof the batch shall be tested.Lifting eyes shall be tested for crack defects on 10 % of a batch in accordance with EN 1290 and EN 1291. If adefect is detected, then the whole of the batch shall be tested.Structural welded joints shall be tested for defects, on 10 % of a batch. If a defect is detected, then the whole of thebatch shall be tested.The frame shall be visually inspected to ensure there is no deviation from the design drawings and that there is fulland free movement of panels and covers where applicable.7.3.2 ManifoldEach manifold shall be proof pressure tested as described in 4.5.3. For the manifolds on which the connections donot allow reassembling after test, these manifolds may be tested on 2 % of a batch.For acetylene see annex B.7.3.3 BundleThe completed bundle shall be leak tested at working pressure to check the integrity of all joints and gasconnections. This operation can be performed in a filling centre during the first fill after assembling as a part of the“inspection at time of filling”.For acetylene see annex B.8 Documentation8.1Records of the components used to produce a bundle and of the history of how and where the bundle wasassembled and tested shall be maintained for every new and reassembled bundle. The records shall contain thefollowing information:¾ unique serial number of bundle;¾ unique serial number of frame;¾ type of master outlet valve(s);¾ gas service for which the bundle is intended;¾ working pressure of the bundle;¾ cylinder serial numbers;¾ name and address of manufacturer plus date of manufacture;8.2Test records of individual components or batches of components shall also be maintained such that theymay be cross-
