Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-2: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances
This international standard deals with the safety of electric vacuum cleaners and watersuction cleaning appliances for household and similar purposes, including vacuum cleaners for animal grooming. Ther rated voltage being not more than 250 V. It also applies to centally-sited vacuum cleaners. This standard also applies to motorized cleaning heads and current-carrying hoses associated with a particular vacuum cleaner.

This amendment A11 modifies the European Standard EN 60335-2-2:2003; it was approved by CENELEC on
2010-04-14. CENELEC members are bound to comply with the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations which
stipulate the conditions for giving this amendment the status of a national standard without any alteration.
Up-to-date lists and bibliographical references concerning such national standards may be obtained on
application to the Central Secretariat or to any CENELEC member.
This amendment exists in three official versions (English, French, German). A version in any other language
made by translation under the responsibility of a CENELEC member into its own language and notified to the
Central Secretariat has the same status as the official versions.

Foreword
A proposal to amend EN 60335-2-2:2003, document CLC/TC 61(SEC)1681, was discussed during the
Brussels meeting of CENELEC TC 61 in June 2009, when it was decided to submit a draft for an
amendment to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
The draft was circulated in June 2009 and was approved by CENELEC as amendment A11 to
EN 60335-2-2:2003 on 2010-04-14.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN and CENELEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent
rights.
The following dates are applicable:
– latest date by which the amendment has to be implemented
at national level by publication of an identical
national standard or by endorsement (dop) 2011-05-01
– latest date by which the national standards conflicting
with the amendment have to be withdrawn (dow) 2013-04-14
This amendment supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses of EN 60335-2-2:2003.
There are no special national conditions causing a deviation from this amendment.

1 Scope
Replace the fifth paragraph including the two dashed items by the following:
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are
encountered by all persons in household and similar environments.
However, in general, it does not take into account:
– children playing with the appliance,
– the use of the appliance by very young children
– the use of the appliance by young children without supervision.
It is recognized that very vulnerable people may have needs beyond the level addressed in this
standard.

NOTE Young children are not expected to use appliances safely unless continuous supervision is given.

7 Markings and instructions
7.10 Add:
Devices used to start/stop operational functions of the appliance, if any, shall be distinguished from other
manual devices by means of shape, or size, or surface texture, or position, etc. A tactile or an audible and
visual feedback shall give an indication that the device has been operated.
NOTE The sound of the motor switching ON/OFF is regarded as audible feedback. The stopping of the typical function (e.g.
stopping of suction function or the stopping of the vibration on the body of the appliance or on the hose/nozzle) is regarded as tactile
means.
7.12 Replace the text of 7.12 in Part 1 and the addition in Part 2-2 by:
7.12 Instructions for use shall be provided with the appliance so that the appliance can be used safely.
NOTE Instructions for use may be marked on the appliance as long as they are visible in normal use.
It is necessary to take precautions during user maintenance, appropriate details shall be given.
