This European Standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of chemical protective clothing to penetration by jets of liquid chemicals. This European Standard is applicable to clothing which may comprise one or more items and which is intended to be worn where there is a risk of exposure to a forceful projection of a liquid chemical. This European Standard is applicable to clothing which is intended to be resistant to penetration under conditions which require total body surface cover but do not demand the wearing of gas-tight clothing. This European Standard is not applicable to permeation of liquid chemicals through materials from which the clothing is made.

Diese Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren zur Bestimmung der Beständigkeit von Schutzkleidung gegen das Durchdringen eines Flüssigkeitsstrahls fest.
Diese Norm gilt für Kleidung mit flüssigkeitsdichten Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Teilen der Kleidung und, sofern zutreffend, zwischen der Kleidung und gleichzeitig getragenen anderen Gegenständen persönlicher Schutzausrüstung.
Diese Norm gilt nicht für die Beständigkeit gegen Permeation von Chemikalien durch Materialien, die in anderen Normen festgelegt ist.

L'ISO 17491-3:2008 s'applique aux vêtements ayant des coutures étanches entre les différentes parties du vêtement, et, le cas échéant, entre le vêtement et les autres équipements de protection individuelle portés en association.

EN ISO 17491-3:2008 (E) 3 Foreword This document (EN ISO 17491-3:2008) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN, in collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 94 "Personal safety - Protective clothing and equipment". This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by February 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by February 2009. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. This document supersedes EN 463:1994. Relationship between this part of ISO 17491 and the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment This part of ISO 17491 has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide one means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 89/686/EEC.
Once this part of ISO 17491 is cited in the Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive and has been implemented as a national standard in at least one Member State, compliance with the normative clauses of this standard, together with the relevant requirements given in the product standards, confers, within the limits of the scope of both standards, a presumption of conformity with the Essential Requirements of Directive 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment, Annex II, Clause 3.10.2.

The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. This first edition of ISO 17491-3, together with ISO 17491-4, cancels and replaces ISO 17491:2002, Clauses 6 and 7 of which have been technically revised. ISO 17491-3:2008(E) iv © ISO 2008 – All rights reserved Introduction This part of ISO 17491 describes a test method for determining the liquid penetration resistance of chemical protective clothing Type 3 (with liquid-tight connections between different parts of the clothing and, if applicable, between the clothing and other items of personal protective equipment). Such clothing comprises one or more items covering the full surface of the body and is intended to be worn under conditions where there is a risk of exposure to a forceful projection of a liquid chemical. Interlaboratory testing has shown that this test method is a repeatable pass/fail method. Other requirements with regard to this type of clothing and its constituent materials can be found in the corresponding product standard (see Bibliography [2]). A document on the selection, use and maintenance of chemical protective clothing is available (see Bibliography [3]). CAUTION — Some of the procedures specified in this part of ISO 17491 involve the use of processes which could lead to hazardous situations and hence appropriate precautions should be taken.
