SIST EN 4880:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 4880:2026 in the CEN system for aerospace standard parts. It specifies the minimum rules for qualification, acceptance, delivery and inspection of standard parts and their assemblies for the aerospace industry and its manufacturers. The document is used when a product standard invokes it, or when delivery terms specifically call for it.
What does SIST EN 4880:2026 specify?
SIST EN 4880:2026 sets the common technical and quality baseline for standard parts used in aerospace. It applies to standard parts and assemblies when a product standard refers to it, and it can also be applied to other parts when the delivery terms explicitly invoke it.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 - scope
- Clause 2 - normative references
- Clause 3 - terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - requirements
- Clause 5 - qualifications and quality assurance provisions
- Clause 6 - conditions on delivery
- Bibliography
A key rule in practice is that where a product standard gives different requirements, those product-standard requirements take precedence for the affected parts or sections.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4880:2026?
SIST EN 4880:2026 focuses on controlled manufacture, traceable inspection, and delivery documentation.
- Clause 4.1, production engineering - The manufacturer must define the manufacturing sealed route and provide it to the customer on request. It must show the operation sequence, pre-treatments, finishes and quality assurance requirements. In practice, this means the process route has to be documented and any approved change must be reported with the next delivery.
- Clause 4.2, materials - Materials must follow the product standard, unless the manufacturer introduces another material and proves compliance through qualification testing. For assemblies, all materials in each part must be identified. This matters because material substitutions are allowed only with evidence and customer approval.
- Clauses 4.3 to 4.5, performance, workmanship and interchangeability - Standard parts must meet the performance requirements of the product standard, any deviation can reject a delivery, and parts with the same manufacturer part number must be directly interchangeable. In practice, fit, function and replacement compatibility must stay stable.
- Clause 4.6, marking - Parts and assemblies must be marked as required by the product standard, or at minimum in accordance with EN 2424, style G when the product standard is silent. Marking must be clear and legible so parts can be identified after manufacture and during use.
- Clause 4.7, protective treatment and surface finish - Protective finish characteristics and chemical composition must match the product standard. This keeps corrosion protection and surface condition under control.
- Clauses 4.8 and 4.9, reports and test conditions - Each delivery must include an acceptance test report to EN 10204 type 2.1, and tests should be performed under the stated standard ambient conditions unless otherwise specified. This gives the customer a consistent basis for acceptance.
- Clause 5, qualification and quality assurance - The manufacturer needs an aerospace-accepted quality management system, inspection responsibility normally sits with the manufacturer, and inspection is split into qualification test, First Article Inspection and conformance/acceptance test. This structure separates product approval from routine lot release.
- Clause 6, delivery conditions - Packaging must protect against humidity, corrosion, impact and contamination, and package marking must include the part designation, manufacturer, order number, lot number and gross weight. Shelf-life-controlled materials also need quarter and year of manufacture. This supports safe transport, storage and traceability.
What terms does SIST EN 4880:2026 define?
- Production lot - A batch of finished standard parts made under the same process, from the same material cast and raw material batch, with the same key characteristics and heat treatment condition.
- Qualification test - A test or series of tests used to show that a standard product complies with the applicable product standards and technical specifications.
- Acceptance test - A test or series of tests carried out by the manufacturer to decide whether a production lot meets its acceptance criteria.
- Manufacturing sealed route - The documented sequence of operations, pre-treatments, finishes and quality assurance requirements used to make the parts.
- First Article Inspection - The initial inspection of newly manufactured parts, components, sub-assemblies, assemblies and the first complete production lot.
- Conformance/Acceptance test - The routine test used to confirm that each part or lot conforms to the specified requirements before delivery.
Who uses SIST EN 4880:2026?
SIST EN 4880:2026 is used by aerospace manufacturers, their customers, quality assurance teams and inspection personnel. It is also relevant to certification authorities or their appointed representatives, since manufacturer approval is tied to an aerospace-accepted quality management system.
In practice, users apply it when they:
- qualify a new standard part or material choice
- approve manufacturing processes and changes
- perform first article inspection and routine lot acceptance
- prepare acceptance test reports and delivery records
- define packaging, marking and traceability for shipment
What changed in SIST EN 4880:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 4880:2026 supersedes EN 4880:2023. The documented changes are:
- normative references were updated
- Clause 3, Terms and definitions, was editorially revised
- 4.7 was retitled from “Protective finish” to “Protective treatment and surface finish”
- 4.8 changed its report reference from ISO 16228 to EN 10204
Which standards are used with SIST EN 4880:2026?
- EN 2424 - Provides the marking style used when the product standard does not specify marking.
- EN 9130:2020 - Gives the reporting format used for the First Article Inspection record.
- EN 10204 - Defines the type 2.1 acceptance test report required with each delivery.
- EN 9100 - Cited as an example of an aerospace-accepted quality management system for manufacturer approval.
What does the SIST EN 4880:2026 document contain?
SIST EN 4880:2026 contains the technical rules for material control, performance, workmanship, interchangeability, marking and surface treatment for aerospace standard parts. It also sets out the inspection framework, including qualification testing, First Article Inspection and conformance/acceptance testing.
The document includes the required delivery documentation and the standard ambient conditions for measurements and tests. It also covers packaging protection and package marking so parts remain identifiable and undamaged in storage and transport.
The practical use of the document is to support design release, supplier qualification, lot acceptance, incoming inspection and shipment preparation for aerospace standard parts.
