Overview
SIST EN 13630-12:2025 - Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 12: Determination of burning duration of safety fuses, is a European Standard developed by CEN (the European Committee for Standardization). This standard specifies precise test methods to determine the burning duration of safety fuses used in civil explosives applications. It ensures consistent performance and reliability of safety fuses, a critical component in the safe use of explosives across various civil sectors. Importantly, SIST EN 13630-12:2025 does not apply to detonating cords.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Covers the determination of burning duration exclusively for safety fuses, excluding detonating cords.
- Test Methods: Includes standardized procedures for burning duration determination both with and without confinement.
- Preparation and Conditioning: Details conditions for sample selection and environmental conditioning before testing.
- Apparatus Requirements: Describes the equipment necessary for accurate testing, including conditioning chambers, supporting devices, time-measuring instruments, and appropriate confinement apparatus.
- Results and Reporting: Specifies how to record, express, and report the results, including key environmental conditions and any failed tests.
- Directive 2014/28/EU: Aligns with EU legislation regarding the market supervision of civil explosives, supporting presumption of conformity with essential safety requirements.
Applications
Implementing SIST EN 13630-12:2025 has practical benefits for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and authorities supervising the safe use of explosives:
- Quality Assurance: Manufacturers use the standard to verify the burning duration of safety fuses, ensuring products meet regulatory and safety requirements before market release.
- Product Certification: Testing laboratories and notified bodies rely on the standard's methods to assess conformity and support CE marking under Directive 2014/28/EU.
- Safe Project Execution: Contractors in construction, mining, and quarrying depend on conforming safety fuses for predictable performance, reducing risk during blasting operations.
- Market Access: Compliance with this standard helps manufacturers access the European market by meeting harmonized safety testing requirements.
