Overview

SIST EN 60464-3-2:2002 - Varnishes used for electrical insulation – Part 3: Specifications for individual materials – Sheet 2: Hot curing impregnating varnishes is a European Standard developed by CLC (CENELEC) and adopted from IEC 60464-3-2:2001. This sheet establishes the requirements for hot curing impregnating varnishes specifically used for electrical insulation applications, particularly focusing on their performance at elevated temperatures.

By defining consistent criteria for hot curing impregnating varnishes, this standard supports quality assurance for manufacturers and users of electrical equipment, ensuring reliable electrical insulation and performance in demanding operational conditions.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application: Details the requirements for varnishes cured at elevated temperatures for use as an impregnating medium in electrical insulation systems.
  • Property Requirements: Sets requirements for critical physical and electrical properties, including:
    • Flash point
    • Viscosity
    • Content of non-volatile matter
    • Stability in an open vessel
    • Drying and/or curing in thick layers
    • Effects on enamelled wires
    • Bend and temperature index tests
    • Resistance to solvent vapour
    • Volume resistivity before and after water immersion
  • Test Methods: Refers to detailed test procedures described in IEC 60464-2, ensuring standardized evaluation across applications.
  • Temperature Classifications: Varnishes are classified according to temperature indices (130, 155, 180, 200, and 220°C), suitable for differing thermal endurance requirements.

Applications

Hot curing impregnating varnishes standardized by SIST EN 60464-3-2:2002 are vital in the electrical insulation of:

  • Electric Motors and Generators: Used for insulation of windings to enhance performance and prolong service life under high thermal stress.
  • Transformers: Improve insulation reliability and resistance to heat, moisture, and chemicals.
  • Coils and Electromagnetic Devices: Provide robust impregnation for windings used in relays, solenoids, and inductors, ensuring electrical and mechanical stability.
  • Appliance Manufacturing: Ensures consistency and safety in high-quality electrical devices.

Consistent use of standardized hot curing impregnating varnishes reduces the risk of insulation failure, supports longer maintenance intervals, and enhances the safety and durability of electrical devices across industrial, commercial, and consumer sectors.

Related Standards

For comprehensive insulation system assessment and compatible materials, the following standards are referenced within SIST EN 60464-3-2:2002:

  • IEC 60172 / EN 60172: Test procedure for the determination of the temperature index of enamelled winding wires.
  • IEC 60317-8 / EN 60317-8: Specifications for polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire, class 180.
  • IEC 60317-13 / EN 60317-13: Specifications for polyester or polyesterimide overcoated with polyamide-imide enamelled round copper wire, class 200.
  • IEC 60464-1 / EN 60464-1: Varnishes used for electrical insulation – Definitions and general requirements.
  • IEC 60464-2 / EN 60464-2: Methods of test for electrical insulating varnishes.
  • IEC 61033: Test methods for determination of bond strength of impregnating agents to an enamelled wire substrate.
  • IEC 60079-7: Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres – Increased safety "e".

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN 60464-3-2:2002 helps manufacturers, quality managers, and testing laboratories to:

  • Specify and verify the performance of hot curing impregnating varnishes.
  • Ensure compatibility and safety across electrical insulation systems.
  • Facilitate compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support international trade and procurement by defining clear quality criteria for electrical varnishes.

By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can achieve high reliability and safety for rotating electrical machines, transformers, and associated equipment requiring hot curing impregnating varnishes.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
