Abstract

IEC 60317-8:2010 specifies the requirements of enamelled round copper winding wires of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which may be modified provided it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are:  - introduction of requirements for appearance;  - new reference to resistance to refrigerants test method;  - deletion of high temperature failure requirements;  - introductin of pin hole test requirements.

SIST EN 60317-8:2010 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60317-8:2010, identical to IEC 60317-8:2010. It specifies requirements for polyesterimide enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180, including the wire properties and tests needed to describe and verify it. It is written for anyone who specifies, makes, tests, buys, or accepts this type of winding wire for electrical equipment.

What does SIST EN 60317-8:2010 specify?

SIST EN 60317-8:2010 covers enamelled round copper winding wires with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin. The resin may be modified, but it must keep the chemical identity of the original resin and still meet all wire requirements.

The document is organized as a short general section and then property-by-property clauses covering dimensions, electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and packaging-related requirements. Annex ZA gives the European normative references and their corresponding publications.

AnnexWhat it covers

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60317-8:2010?

SIST EN 60317-8:2010 defines a class 180 wire and ties that class to a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. In practice, this is the core identification rule for the wire grade and its thermal performance.

Clause 4 and the scope together set the covered nominal conductor diameters by grade. That matters because the rest of the test limits depend on the diameter and the selected grade.

Clause 8 refers to flexibility and adherence from IEC 60317-0-1, but fixes the constant K used for the peel test at 110 mm. That means the peel test is not fully generic here - the calculation is locked to this value.

Clause 9 sets the minimum heat shock temperature at 200 °C, and Clause 10 requires no failure in the cut-through test within 2 min at 300 °C. These two clauses tell a buyer or test lab how the coating should behave when the wire is heated or forced under load.

Clause 11 gives abrasion resistance limits by nominal conductor diameter and by Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3, with intermediate diameters taking the next larger value. This is the part to use when comparing durability across sizes.

Clause 12 limits solvent damage by saying the change shall not exceed a reduction of three grades of pencil hardness. Clause 13 applies breakdown voltage testing at 180 °C, and Clause 15 requires a minimum temperature index of 180. Together, these clauses define how the wire is checked for chemical and electrical endurance.

Clause 16 adds a refrigerants test from IEC 60851-4 and limits extractable matter to 0,5 %, while also requiring breakdown voltage to remain at 75 % of the minimum specified value. For users, this is the key clause if the wire will be exposed to refrigerants.

What terms does SIST EN 60317-8:2010 define?

  • Class 180 - the thermal class for this wire, tied to the minimum temperature index and heat shock level in the scope.
  • Temperature index - the temperature rating used to characterize long-term thermal capability.
  • Heat shock - a test of whether the enamel coating survives a high-temperature exposure without failing.
  • Cut-through - a test that checks whether the insulation resists being cut or penetrated under heat and pressure.
  • Continuity of insulation - the check that the coating remains continuous and does not have interruptions that could cause electrical failure.
  • Modified resin - a polyesterimide resin that has been chemically changed or has additives, while keeping the original resin identity.

Who uses SIST EN 60317-8:2010?

SIST EN 60317-8:2010 is used by winding-wire manufacturers, electrical equipment makers, test laboratories, and purchasing or quality teams that need to specify or verify enamelled round copper wire. It is relevant wherever insulated wire is used for windings in electrical equipment.

What changed in SIST EN 60317-8:2010 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60317-8:2010 replaces SIST EN 60317-8:2001, SIST EN 60317-8:2001/A1:2001, and SIST EN 60317-8:2001/A2:2002, and EN 60317-8:1994 + A1:1997 + A2:1998. The stated main changes are:

  • requirements for appearance were added
  • a reference to a resistance to refrigerants test method was added
  • high temperature failure requirements were deleted
  • pin hole test requirements were added

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60317-8:2010?

  • IEC 60317-0-1:2008 - gives the general requirements for enamelled round copper wire, and this part refers back to it for terms, test notes, dimensions, resistance, elongation, springiness, adhesion, heat shock, breakdown voltage, insulation continuity, temperature index, pin hole test, and packaging.
  • IEC 60851-4:1996 + Amendments 1 and 2 - provides the chemical properties test method used for the resistance to refrigerants clause.
  • The introduction places this part in the wider IEC 60317 family for winding-wire specifications, alongside IEC 60851 for test methods and IEC 60264 for packaging.

What does the SIST EN 60317-8:2010 document contain?

The document contains the scope, normative references, terms and notes on test methods, appearance, and then a sequence of clauses covering the main wire properties. It also includes one abrasion-resistance table that gives limits by conductor diameter and grade. The test clauses cover electrical resistance, mechanical behavior, heat resistance, chemical resistance, dielectric performance, refrigerant resistance, and pin hole testing. For users, this means the standard is a practical specification for product verification, incoming inspection, and supplier qualification, not just a material description.
