Overview

SIST EN 300 720-1 V1.2.1:2003 is a Slovenian standard that specifies the technical characteristics and methods of measurement for Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) on-board communication systems and equipment. Focusing on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio spectrum matters, this standard is essential for ensuring reliable and interference-free UHF radio equipment suitable for maritime and other on-board environments. Its requirements are harmonized with European standards, incorporating editorial modifications from ETS 300 720-2 and technical updates from the ERM#10 group.

Key Topics

  • Technical Characteristics: Specifies construction, operating frequencies, required controls, channel switching times, safety precautions, emission classes, battery provisions, audio equipment, labeling, and documentation.
  • Measurement Methods: Defines how to verify technical requirements, including test setups for radio frequency output, signal clarity, spurious emissions, audio response, and environmental performance.
  • Test Conditions: Outlines normal and extreme operating conditions for temperature, humidity, and power supply, ensuring robust performance in a wide range of environments typical in maritime and on-board use.
  • Environmental and Electrical Safety: Mandates protections against reverse battery polarity, open or short antenna circuits, and includes requirements for compass safety distances.
  • Performance Verification: Dictates precise methodologies for assessing transmitter and receiver functionality, such as frequency error, carrier power, modulation, sensitivity, selectivity, and spurious emissions.

Applications

SIST EN 300 720-1 V1.2.1:2003 is widely applicable for organizations and manufacturers involved in the design, production, and deployment of UHF on-board communication systems, particularly for:

  • Maritime Communications: Ensures shipboard radios conform to international and EU requirements, operating reliably in demanding marine environments.
  • Navigation and Control Equipment: Supports safe and efficient operations on vessels, platforms, and vehicles where robust internal communication is required.
  • Testing and Certification: Provides a basis for testing laboratories and certification bodies to validate product compliance and interoperability.
  • Product Development: Assists engineers and designers in aligning new equipment with regulatory requirements for electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum use.

Related Standards

Several international standards and regulations are referenced or aligned with SIST EN 300 720-1 V1.2.1:2003, including:

  • EN 300 720-2: Harmonized European standard under R&TTE Directive for UHF on-board communication.
  • ITU Radio Regulations (Appendix 20): Defines maritime mobile service frequency allocations and equipment specifications.
  • ETSI TR 028: Addresses uncertainties in the measurement of mobile radio equipment characteristics.
  • ITU-T Recommendation P.53: Concerns apparatus for objective measurement of circuit noise (psophometers).
  • ISO 694: Specifies the positioning of magnetic compasses in ships, including compass safe distances.

Practical Value

By implementing SIST EN 300 720-1 V1.2.1:2003, stakeholders ensure:

  • Radio Equipment Compliance: Adherence with key regulatory and technical requirements for EMC and radio spectrum matters.
  • Operational Reliability: Enhanced on-board communication system performance under varying environmental and electrical conditions.
  • Safety and Interference Prevention: Minimization of interference with navigation and control equipment, contributing to overall maritime safety.
  • Market Access: Simplified entry into the European market by aligning with harmonized standards and certification practices.

This standard is essential for anyone involved in the production, testing, or deployment of UHF communication equipment intended for use in maritime or similar shipboard applications.
