SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of draft European amendment prA1 to EN 12153:2023, prepared by CEN. It updates the test method for determining the air permeability of curtain walling, including both fixed parts and openable parts. The method applies to curtain walling products as defined in EN 13830 and specifies testing under positive and negative air pressure.
What does SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 specify?
SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 specifies changes to the air permeability test method for curtain walling. The amendment mainly clarifies terminology, symbols, test preparation, the pressure-test sequence, and how results are expressed.
The document is organized as a European foreword followed by Clauses 1 to 12 and Figure 3. The main technical changes are concentrated in Clause 3, Clause 4, and Clause 7.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026?
Terms and measurement basis
Clause 3 revises the definition of openable joint length so it covers the joints of all moving casement or sash and the glazing/infill joints of openable parts. In practice, the same leakage paths are treated consistently when the openable parts are assessed.
Clause 3 also revises overall area and links it to Figure 3. This matters because the reported permeability for fixed parts is expressed per unit area, so the area reference must match the specimen layout.
Test preparation and pressure testing
Clause 7.2 and Clause 7.3.1 require all joints of openable parts to be taped airtight before the fixed-parts test. This isolates leakage through fixed joints from leakage through moving parts.
Clauses 7.3.2 and 7.3.3 keep the positive-pressure and negative-pressure tests for fixed parts, while Clause 7.3.4 covers the pressure test for openable parts. The untaped test on openable parts should not be repeated if those openable parts have already been tested and classified according to EN 1026 and EN 12207.
Reporting results
Clause 7.3.5 separates the result expression for fixed parts and joints of openable parts. The amendment keeps the results tied to airflow measurements in the test chamber and requires separate reporting for fixed parts and for the joints of openable parts.
For fixed parts, the air permeability is calculated per unit area; for openable parts, it is calculated per unit length of joints. In practice, this gives two comparable outputs for the two leakage paths and supports clear product documentation.
Figure 3 is also updated. Its key identifies the fixed joint, the openable joint according to EN 12207, and the glazing/infill joint of openable parts, which helps test staff tape the correct joints during the different test stages.
What terms does SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 define?
- openable joint length - the total length of the joints of openable parts used for the openable-part result calculation.
- overall area - the area reference used for the fixed-parts result calculation and linked to Figure 3.
- fixed parts - the non-openable parts of the curtain walling tested separately from openable parts.
- joints of openable parts - the joints belonging to openable parts, including the openable joints and glazing/infill joints.
- Q_fc - the airflow into the test chamber measured with only the joints of openable parts sealed.
- Q_tc - the airflow into the test chamber measured with the joints of openable parts unsealed.
- L0 - the total length of the joints of openable parts.
Who uses SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026?
SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 is used by test laboratories, curtain walling manufacturers, façade engineers, and conformity assessment bodies. Quality managers and buyers use it to understand how air permeability is measured and how test reports separate fixed parts from openable parts.
It is relevant when preparing specimens, choosing the correct taped or untaped test condition, comparing products, and documenting performance for curtain walling systems.
What changed in SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 modifies EN 12153:2023. The stated changes are:
- revised definitions for 3.7 and 3.8
- revised symbols and abbreviations in Clause 4
- revised test preparation in 7.2
- revised general rules in 7.3.1
- revised titles and text for the positive and negative pressure tests for fixed parts
- revised title and text for the pressure test for openable parts
- revised expression of results in 7.3.5
- revised key and title for Figure 3
Which standards are used with SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026?
- EN 13830 - defines the curtain walling product family to which the test method applies.
- EN 1026 - is referenced when deciding whether the untaped openable-parts test needs to be carried out.
- EN 12207 - is referenced for the openable joint definition and for prior testing/classification of openable parts.
What does the SIST EN 12153:2023/oprA1:2026 document contain?
The document contains revised definitions, updated symbols, and the amended test procedure for air permeability of curtain walling. It shows how to prepare the specimen, how to tape or untape the joints of openable parts, and how to run the positive and negative pressure tests.
It also contains the result-expression section that separates fixed parts from openable parts and instructs the reader to plot results against test pressure. Figure 3 provides the joint arrangement used during testing and reporting.
