Overview
EN 10314:2016 (CEN) defines a statistical method to derive minimum values of proof strength (Rp) for steels exposed to elevated temperatures. The standard describes how to convert tensile test data at room and elevated temperatures into temperature-dependent minimum proof-strength curves suitable for inclusion in product standards. Important: EN 10314:2016 specifies the derivation method but does not prescribe a verification procedure or test frequency.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Derivation of minimum proof strength values for steels at elevated temperatures; can be applied to tensile strength or, where only minimum yield at 20 °C exists, adapted to yield strength (Re) with caution.
- Input data: Paired tensile test results from the same product - room temperature (EN ISO 6892-1) and elevated temperature (EN ISO 6892-2).
- Data grouping: Apply the method separately by steel grade, product form, heat-treatment range, thickness range and test-piece location/orientation.
- Ratio values f(t): Normalize elevated-temperature property to room-temperature value (f(t) = property(t) / property(20 °C)). Each data set produces a result set of f(t) vs. temperature.
- Trend curve: Fit a trend through ratio data that passes through 1.0 at room temperature (commonly a polynomial degree 1–4 using least-squares). Check for multiple populations and separate if needed.
- Derivation rules: Use the trend-average fav(t) and prescribed formulae (different branches depending on fav(t) threshold, notably fav(t) ≈ 0.4) to calculate Rp(t)min. The method incorporates residual scatter and conservative offsets to represent lower confidence levels.
- Minimum dataset: At least 8 data sets, with temperature intervals typically 50–100 °C, and overall ≥80% coverage of selected temperature points. Data should preferably come from multiple sources.
- Data quality: Examine consistency; discard non-representative data. Final results require visual inspection and agreement with the data supplier.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Standards developers, product specification writers, material engineers, testing laboratories, steel manufacturers, and designers of pressure equipment.
- Practical uses: Deriving tabulated minimum Rp(t) values for product standards; reducing the need for routine elevated-temperature tensile testing when validated minimums are available; supporting design calculations for pressure vessels, boilers and high-temperature components where elevated-temperature strength properties are required.
Related standards
- EN ISO 6892-1 (tensile testing at room temperature)
- EN ISO 6892-2 (tensile testing at elevated temperature)
- Historical references: ENV/ISO 2605 series (ENV 22605), which informed earlier procedures
EN 10314:2016 is a practical, statistically based approach for producing conservative, representative minimum proof-strength curves for steels used in elevated-temperature service.

«3, sets out a method for deriving minimum proof strength values for steels at elevated temperatures with the intention that such values are specified in relevant product standards. This European Standard does not specify a frequency of testing for the product standards where EN 10314 is applied. Verification of tensile properties at elevated temperatures is normally specified in the relevant product standard using the minimum property values derived by the procedure established in this European Standard. The method has been tested for proof strength values of steel. However, it is considered that the method can also be applied for the derivation of minimum values of tensile strength at elevated temperatures. SIST EN 10314:2016
