Overview

EN ISO 12543-5:2021 - "Glass in building - Laminated glass and laminated safety glass - Part 5: Dimensions and edge finishing" - is the CEN-adopted ISO standard that specifies dimensional requirements, limit deviations and allowable edge finishes for laminated glass used in building applications. The standard applies to laminated and laminated safety glass panes (not applicable to panes smaller than 0.05 m²) and is intended to harmonize tolerances for manufacture, inspection and procurement across Europe.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Defines dimensions, limit deviations and edge finishes for laminated glass and laminated safety glass for building use.
    • Excludes panes with area < 0.05 m².
  • Thickness and tolerances
    • Nominal thickness is the sum of nominal thicknesses of constituent glass panes, plastic glazing sheets and interlayers.
    • Limit deviations for folio-laminated products are the sum of constituent pane tolerances plus an additional tolerance for interlayer thickness:
      • Interlayer ≤ 2 mm: additional ±0.1 mm
      • Interlayer > 2 mm: additional ±0.2 mm
    • For cast-in-place interlayers the standard gives limit deviations by thickness (examples):
      • < 1 mm: ±0.4 mm
      • ≥1 to <2 mm: ±0.5 mm
      • ≥2 to <3 mm: ±0.6 mm
      • ≥3 mm: ±0.7 mm
    • Fire-resistant interlayers have a similar table with values up to ±0.7 mm for ≥5 mm.
  • Dimensions, squareness and offset
    • Methods for measuring width (B), length (H), squareness and offset (misalignment of constituent panes) are specified to control fitting and sealing in frames.
  • Edge finishes
    • Recognizes common finishes and their definitions: cut edge, arrissed, ground, smooth ground, polished, bevel, sawn, water jet cut, etc.
  • Flatness and measurement
    • Criteria and measurement approaches for pane flatness to ensure optical and installation performance.

Applications and practical value

  • Use this standard to:
    • Specify tolerances in procurement documents and shop drawings for laminated glazing.
    • Establish quality control acceptance criteria in manufacturing and inspection.
    • Ensure compatibility of laminated panes with framing, seals and building façades.
    • Verify thickness and edge finish requirements for safety glazing, fire-resistant laminated products and special interlayer systems.
  • Typical users: architects, façade engineers, glazing manufacturers, fabricators, testing laboratories, building certifiers and procurement teams.

Related standards

  • ISO 12543-1 (Definitions and component descriptions) is normative and referenced by Part 5.
  • EN/ISO basic product standards for float glass and plastic glazing sheets are used to determine constituent tolerances (see ISO 12543-1 bibliography).

Keywords: EN ISO 12543-5:2021, laminated glass, laminated safety glass, dimensions, edge finishing, limit deviations, thickness tolerances, glass in building.

The SIST EN ISO 12543-5:2022 standard provides essential specifications concerning the dimensions, limit deviations, and edge finishing of laminated glass and laminated safety glass utilized in building applications. This document is pivotal for manufacturers and fabricators involved in the production of laminated glass products, as it defines clear parameters that ensure compatibility and safety in usage. One of the strengths of this standard lies in its comprehensive approach to dimensional tolerances, which facilitates uniformity and consistency in the production process. By establishing precise limit deviations, the standard enhances quality control and minimizes the risk of defects that can compromise structural integrity or safety performance. Such clarity is vital for stakeholders in the building industry, including architects and engineers, who rely on these specifications to meet rigorous safety standards. Additionally, the emphasis on edge finishing in the standard serves a dual purpose. It not only contributes to the aesthetic appeal of laminated glass but also plays an important role in preventing potential hazards, such as sharp edges that could cause injury. This focus on both functionality and design significance maximizes the utility of laminated glass in various building applications. The exclusion of panes with an area less than 0.05 m² from the document's scope is another noteworthy aspect, as it directs attention toward larger, more commonly used glass products in construction, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to areas of higher relevance. By concentrating on these products, the standard aligns with industry needs while promoting best practices in laminated glass production. In summary, the SIST EN ISO 12543-5:2022 is a relevant and robust document that fortifies the framework in which laminated glass and laminated safety glass are used in the building sector. Its well-defined guidelines on dimensions, limit deviations, and edge finishing fortify both safety and aesthetic considerations, solidifying its importance in contemporary building practices.
