Natural stone test methods - Determination of the slip resistance by means of the pendulum tester

This European Standard specifies a test method to determine the slip resistance value of the surface of the exposed face of natural stone elements intended to be used for flooring in buildings.
NOTE 1   If the surface of the exposed face has a roughness measured according to prEN 13373 higher than 1 mm it will be considered as not slippery, without performing the test.
NOTE 2   This method can be used for laboratory measurements or on floors in service.

Overview

EN 14231:2003 is a CEN standard that specifies a reproducible test method to determine the slip resistance of the exposed face of natural stone flooring using a pendulum friction tester. The method produces a standardized slip resistance value (SRV) for dry and wet conditions and can be applied in both laboratory and in-service (on-floor) testing. Note that surfaces with a measured roughness greater than 1 mm (prEN 13373) are considered non‑slippery and need not be tested.

Key Topics

  • Test principle: A spring‑loaded rubber slider attached to a pendulum arm contacts the stone surface. Friction reduces the pendulum swing; the reduction is read on a calibrated scale and reported as SRV.
  • Apparatus and scales:
    • Pendulum friction tester with pointer and circular C scale (126 mm sliding length) and F scale (76 mm sliding length).
    • Two slider sizes: wide (≈76.2 mm) and narrow (≈31.8 mm) with specified dimensions, mass and geometry.
    • Slider properties: specified hardness (IRHD) and rebound resilience (ISO 7619, ISO 4662, ISO 48 referenced). Static contact force on the slider when calibrated: 22.2 ± 0.5 N.
  • Specimen requirements:
    • Typical test area: 136 × 86 mm using the wide slider (C scale). If not possible, 42 × 86 mm with the narrow slider (F scale).
  • Procedure controls:
    • Conditioning rules for new sliders and discard criteria (striking edge width > 3 mm, or excessive damage; slider life limit referenced).
    • Environmental limits: surface and slider temperature 5 °C to 40 °C.
    • Repeatability rule: five successive readings within ±3 units (C scale) or 0.03 (F scale).
  • Calibration and quality:
    • Annual recalibration required (calibration procedure in Annex A).
    • Wet and dry testing procedures and reporting format specified.

Applications

EN 14231 is used by:

  • Testing laboratories to generate certified SRV data for natural stone products.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers for product characterization and quality control.
  • Architects, specifiers and engineers to select appropriate stone finishes for safe flooring.
  • Installers, facility managers and safety officers assessing in-service floors for slip risk, especially in wet or trafficked areas (entrances, ramps, wet rooms).
  • Regulatory bodies and procurement teams referencing standardized slip resistance data in building safety specifications.

Keywords: EN 14231, pendulum tester, slip resistance, natural stone, SRV, pendulum friction tester, C scale, F scale, flooring safety, prEN 13373.

Related standards
