Overview

EN 6095:2023 - Aerospace series - Rotary fasteners - Structural and non-structural applications - Technical specification is a CEN standard that defines required characteristics, inspections, tests, quality assurance and acceptance/delivery conditions for rotary (turnlock) fasteners used in aerospace. It applies to all rotary fasteners for structural and non‑structural use and is intended to be referenced by product standards or design specifications.

Key topics and technical requirements

This technical specification covers the following core areas and measurable requirements:

  • Materials and traceability
    • Chemical composition evidence via inspection certificates (EN 10204).
  • Dimensions, mass and surface quality
    • Dimensional inspection, surface defect checks (ISO 8785) and roughness assessment (BS 2634-1 / ISO 4288).
  • Mechanical performance
    • Tensile and shear loads (rated and ultimate), retainer/stud push-out and receptacle push-out per referenced test methods (e.g., NASM22978).
    • Torque tests: tightening and locking torques measured at room and limit temperatures (tightening: −40 °C and 100 °C; locking: −55 °C and 150 °C).
    • Torque‑out: tested at 200% of max tightening torque (125% for very small threads).
    • Endurance: 1 500 operation cycles (minimum 800 for small diameters) and wear assessment under axial preload.
    • Vibration: 30 min test with no opening or permanent deformation.
  • Environmental performance
    • Corrosion resistance: 24 h salt spray (EN ISO 9227), 4 days condensation (EN ISO 6270‑2) and 2 days ambient (23 °C / 50% RH).
    • Permeability testing (ASTM A342) for installation-ready fasteners.
    • Resistance to fluids for non‑metallic components (ISO 1817).
    • Pressure tightness where required (nominal 0.35 bar; proof 0.7 bar).
  • Functionality and identification
    • Guarantee of safe function for all stud/receptacle combinations and marking/packaging per EN 2424.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 6095:2023:

  • Aerospace fastener manufacturers and suppliers for product qualification and delivery.
  • Design engineers and OEMs specifying rotary fasteners for covers, fairings, access panels and equipment.
  • Quality and test engineers implementing acceptance tests, production controls and supplier audits.
  • Procurement and certification bodies ensuring compliance with aerospace quality systems (EN 9100).

Practical uses:

  • Specifying test regimes for structural and non‑structural turnlocks.
  • Defining acceptance criteria for incoming fastener lots.
  • Supporting qualification programs and contractually referenced product standards.

Related standards

  • EN 2424 (marking), EN 9100 (quality management), EN 10204 (inspection documents)
  • NASM22978 (rotary fastener tests), EN ISO 9227, EN ISO 6270‑2, ISO 1817, ASTM A342

For implementation, reference the product standard or design specification that invokes EN 6095:2023 and coordinate qualification/test methods with supplier and customer requirements.
