Overview
EN 50636-2-107:2015/prA4:2023 is a CENELEC draft amendment to the European standard that defines particular safety requirements for robotic battery‑powered electrical lawnmowers. The amendment updates normative references, refines the definition of sensor, and revises key construction and component requirements (notably obstruction‑sensor behaviour and switch testing). It is intended to support compliance with applicable EU Directives and to be adopted by national electrotechnical committees.
Key topics and technical requirements
Normative references
- Replaces EN 61058-1:2002 with EN IEC 61058-1:2018 for appliance switches.
Definitions
- Updates 3.132 sensor to cover devices responding to heat, light, sound, pressure, magnetism and motion; includes lift, obstruction, tilt and rollover sensor notes.
Obstruction sensors (Clause 22.105.2)
- Robotic mowers must include obstruction sensor(s) active in automatic mode for all operating positions and travel directions except where cutting means are not operating with limited travel.
- Maximum contact forces: ≤ 260 N during the first 0.5 s after impact (and > 50 N), and ≤ 130 N thereafter.
- Stopping requirement: traction drive must stop within t = D / v (distance from front edge to cutting tip circle divided by approach velocity).
- Restart behaviour: machine must attempt to move away so the sensor deactivates within 3 s; if not, cutting means stop (20.102.2). After 10 s without deactivation, traction drive must be deactivated and restart only via the specified restart procedure.
- Non‑contact sensor acceptance: permitted when responding to defined rigid non‑metallic targets (specified cylinder dimensions and colour/temperature normalization).
- Test methods: impact tests using a force measuring assembly (impact plate ~90 mm diameter, spring constant ~60 N/mm, bandwidth ~150 Hz) repeated five times; tests repeated under electronic fault conditions (19.11.2) and software error controls (Table R.1 / Annex R).
Switches and components (Clause 24.1.3)
- Switches must comply with EN IEC 61058‑1:2018 under actual machine load; declared cycle life ≥ 10 000 operations or be tested in‑machine for functional performance.
- If switches operate relays/contactor or motor loads, complete switching systems or in‑machine tests are required; breaking capability tests also mandated for motor control switches.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers and designers of robotic battery‑powered lawnmowers seeking CE‑conformant safety design.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity assessment and type testing.
- Safety engineers, compliance officers and procurement teams evaluating product safety, component selection (sensors, switches) and fail‑safe behaviour.
- Regulators and standards committees aligning national standards with CENELEC amendments.
