Signalling on low-voltage electrical installations in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148,5 kHz Part 4-5: Low voltage decoupling filter - Segmentation filter

This document applies to segmentation filters in a mains communication system intended for utility networks or household and similar fixed installation including residential, commercial and light industrial buildings.
These filters are used to control the coupling of signals between two areas of a mains communication system, as illustrated in Figure 1.
This document defines in the relevant frequency range:
- the minimum impedance at both ports of the filter,
- the minimum attenuation of signals transmitted between the ports of the filter.

Overview

EN 50065-4-5:2023 (CLC) specifies requirements for segmentation filters - a type of low-voltage decoupling filter used in mains communication systems operating in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148.5 kHz. The standard applies to utility networks and household or similar fixed installations (residential, commercial and light industrial buildings). It defines how segmentation filters control signal coupling between two areas of a mains communication system by setting minimum electrical characteristics and test requirements.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope & purpose
    • Defines minimum impedance at filter ports and minimum attenuation/transfer function between ports in the relevant frequency bands.
  • Classification
    • Type 1 - Asymmetrical filter: one “supply backbone port” and one “segment port” with different impedance characteristics.
    • Type 2 - Symmetrical filter: two “segment ports” with matched impedance characteristics.
  • Operating frequency bands
    • Utility segmentation filters: 3 kHz to 95 kHz
    • Consumer segmentation filters: 95 kHz to 148.5 kHz
  • Impedance requirements
    • Measured per EN 50065-4-1 procedures with opposite port loaded:
      • Utility: modulus of impedance > 20 Ω
      • Consumer: modulus of impedance > 5 Ω
    • For asymmetrical filters, the requirement applies to the segment port; no minimum on the supply backbone port.
  • Transfer/attenuation
    • The filter must provide the attenuation or transfer function declared by the manufacturer when tested according to EN 50065-4-1 test setups and methods.
  • EMC immunity and safety
    • Filters must meet immunity requirements in EN 50065-2-1 / EN 50065-2-2 / EN 50065-2-3 depending on environment (residential, industrial, utility).
    • Safety obligations reference the applicable part between EN 50065-4-2 and EN 50065-4-7.

Applications and Practical Value

  • Use cases:
    • Segmenting and isolating different sections of a power-line communication (PLC) network to control signal propagation and reduce interference.
    • Deployments in utility distribution networks, smart metering backbones, building automation and in-home PLC systems.
  • Practical benefits:
    • Enables predictable signal attenuation between network areas.
    • Supports EMC compliance and targeted communication design by specifying measurable impedance and attenuation targets.
    • Informs manufacturers’ design and testing of decoupling/segmentation filters to meet network performance and regulatory requirements.

Who should use this standard

  • Filter and PLC equipment manufacturers
  • Utility and telecom network engineers
  • EMC and test laboratories
  • Electrical installers and building automation system integrators
  • Standards and compliance teams
