General Information
Overview
SIST EN 60512-1-4:2002 is a key standard published by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that defines a fundamental test method to verify contact protection effectiveness, commonly known as the "scoop-proof" test, for electromechanical components used in electronic equipment. This standard focuses on ensuring that connectors can prevent accidental contact with their conductive elements during mating, enhancing user safety and device reliability.
This standard is part of the IEC 60512 series, which covers basic testing procedures and measuring methods for electromechanical components. Specifically, Part 1: General - Section 4: Test 1d outlines a consistent, reproducible test method used primarily for multi-contact cylindrical connectors.
Key Topics
Scope and Objective
The purpose is to confirm that connectors provide effective protection against accidental touching of contacts by the front of the mating connector. This is critical for ensuring scoop-proof performance, which prevents electrical hazards and damage during connection or disconnection.Test Methods
Two primary methods are defined to evaluate contact protection:- Method A: Detects electrical continuity between the connector housing and contacts during simulated mismating with both male-to-female and female-to-male configurations. Any unintended contact indicates failure.
- Method B: Applies a voltage proof test between groups of contacts fitted with male contacts on both free and fixed connectors to detect breakdown or flashover phenomena.
Specimen Preparation
Connectors must have a full set of contacts installed and wired according to the detailed specifications relevant to the device under test.Testing Equipment
Uses devices such as ohmmeters to detect unintended electrical continuity and applies specified test voltages for insulation verification.Requirements
- No electrical continuity between the shell and the contacts during mismating (Method A).
- No electrical breakdown or flashover under the test voltage (Method B).
Detail Specification Needs
The standard requires clear details on wiring, test voltages, and any deviations from the prescribed methods to be provided in the product’s technical documentation.
Applications
This standard is vital in the design and quality assurance of connectors used in various electronic equipment, including:
- Industrial control systems
- Telecommunications hardware
- Medical devices requiring high safety standards
- Aerospace and automotive connectors
- Multi-contact cylindrical connectors prone to accidental contact risk
By applying EN 60512-1-4 tests, manufacturers can certify that their connectors meet international safety requirements to avoid electrical hazards during connector mating or handling.

- IEC 60512-4-1: Addresses voltage proof testing methods referenced within Method B of this standard.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional s
