Motorcyclists' protective clothing against mechanical impact - Part 4: Motorcyclists' inflatable protectors - Requirements and test methods

This document covers requirements and test methods for mechanically activated inflatable protectors for motorcycle riders (in the following text called inflatable protector). It specifies the minimum level of protection, the minimum intervention time for the airbag system and the minimum coverage body zone to be protected by motorcyclists' inflatable protector worn by riders. The requirements of this document are applicable to various design of inflatable protectors and refer to all body areas and their combinations, which are claimed to be protected. Requirement of this document are applicable to airbag system, to the specific hosting garment (or textile restrain system) and to the mechanical triggering system.
This document contains the requirements for assessing the performance of airbag system, specific hosting garment (or textile restraint system), and mechanical triggering system during an accident and details of the test methods, requirements sizing, ergonomics, innocuousness, labelling and the provision of information.
This document is not applicable to pre inflated protector. Inflatable protectors other than mechanically activated are not covered by this document.

European foreword
This document (prEN 1621-4:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 “Protective
clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 1621-4:2013.
The main changes compared with EN 1621-4:2013 are as follows:
— inflation time test of the airbag system changed from visual video inspection method to internal pressure
inspection method;
— clarification that motorcycle airbag protector is an independent garment;
— clarification of the function of the airbag system as pure airbag or in combination with rigid protectors;
— manufacturer's statement to distinguish when the airbag protector can be worn inside or outside another
garment;
— improved descriptions of the test procedure.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its Member
States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
EN 1621 consists of the following parts, under the general title “Motorcyclists’ protective clothing against
mechanical impact “:
— Part 1: Motorcyclists' limb joint impact protectors — Requirements and test methods
— Part 2: Motorcyclists' back protectors — Requirements and test methods
— Part 3: Motorcyclists' chest protectors — Requirements and test methods
— Part 4: Motorcyclists’ mechanically activated inflatable protectors — Requirements and test methods
FprEN 1621-4:2012 (E)
Introduction
Motorcyclists' inflatable protectors are garments (or pieces of garment with independent textile restraint
system) worn by the Motorcyclist which aim to reduce the severity of injuries in case of motorcycle accidents.
Motorcyclists typically wear additional over-garments (e.g. jackets, raincoat, and leather suit) and they use
inflatable protectors over or under such additional over-garment. Indications on how to wear the inflatable
protector over or under the additional over-garment are provided by the manufacturer.
Motorcyclists' inflatable protectors are garments made by three main components: an “airbag system”, a
“specific hosting garment” which hosts the airbag system (or independent textile restrain system) and a
“mechanical triggering system” which detects accident situations. The “specific hosting garment” could be a
specific textile system or it could include belts, zippers and buckles. In any case, the Motorcyclists' inflatable
protectors have to be intended as a complete garment to be worn.
The inflatable protectors covered by this document give protection only when inflated.
The performance requirements have been selected to provide the best practical compromise between
protection, comfort, and ergonomic requirements. Protectors that are too stiff or heavy are not worn. The test
methods are designed to provide information on protection against mechanical impacts. The force levels in the
tests do not relate directly to the forces riders are exposed to in accidents, but experiences have shown that
products meeting the requirements of this European Standard may reduce the severity o
